TBT: Someone a day or two ago talked about a former lively discussion centered on folding fitted sheets. There was another infamous discussion in days gone past. IMagine my surprise to see this at the bottom of the ATop page under "tweets from ATop members" WFMZ-TV 69News ✔ @69news Bull semen worth $70,000 stolen from farm. WFMZ.com/32279834 Retweeted by TravelBert Ah, yes! The good old days.

Without bringing the whole post over, I want to thank you, AdamRocks, for the compilation of the differences between Country and Western music - very interesting and helpful. Both are legitimate forms of music in my mind, and in their most basic forms arise as poignant human expressions of where people live and have their being. My mother had a book which has been passed on to me called The American Song Bag compiled by Carl Sandburg which explores the roots of these American musical genres.
Some songs are very simple one-liners: "Great God, I'm feelin' bad; I ain't got the man I thought I had." What more do you need to add to that.
Other songs, such as "Sweet Betsy from Pike" go on and on with verse after verse added on, as this was a song of the pioneers headed West.
My mother was very much interested in the Appalachian folk and bluegrass traditions along with the fusion with African songs and blues. As a kid I also liked the Western songs which spoke to me of wide open spaces, long distances, and a certain sense of loneliness. While I particularly liked the Sons of the Pioneers, there was one Western artist not mentioned in the list that I think should have been included - and that was Tex Ritter (do you remember him, Momtomany?). He was the father of actor John Ritter, and he was just about my favorite Western singer.

Oh for crissakes, it was just a joke. I don't care what Fox's employment status is. Gezus..it's like walking onto a firing range in this place anymore. Q3: just popping in a comment here -- a general comment but this is a good example ( @vivlite forgive me for using your post to illustrate), if you make a joke be sure that it is clear in your post. It only adds two keystrokes to add a With all the fans harassing Sterling Fox, hard to tell that your post was a joke vs. all the very serious comments from others.
I left for awhile today to let off steam. Hermeticallysealed had a very valid post and I was for some reason edgy. You all can see when edgy takes precedence over common sense what can happen. I am very glad Q3 used my post as an example of one that went awry. There is much excitement and tension and I will take responsibility to make my posts more clear. I post this to own my stuff. Not because Q3 used me as an example. I think it's one that maybe we can all learn from. At least I know I have. My post could have been easily misconstrued. It was not conveyed with clarity, joke or no. Hermeticallysealed, please accept my apology. I know what it's like to have someone go off on me and it is hurtful and rude. I hope you will keep posting as I enjoy your posts, despite today's debacle. And to all you Atopers, sorry I tainted your day as well. I've been here so long and it never ceases to amaze me how I still keep learning lessons..sometimes the hard way. I bought a new pair of water wings this afternoon. Hopefully, they will keep me floating in a positive direction. And I think I need to hone my sense of humor doing some major laps in the shallow end.. Sorry, guys and gals. What a lovely post, Viv.

I'm seeing a lot of confusion on twitter about the exact time of the Ghost Town release.
If you are a regular purchaser of digital music it shouldn't be confusing...... if you aren't, it will be available at one minute after midnight EST on the 21rst. For those like myself on the west coast......US and Canada, that will be 9:01 pm on the 20th. Just factor in your time zone wherever you are in the world.
I'm so excited!!!!

annala...glad you enjoyed the comparison.
Here's a Tex Ritter song, High Noon, from youtube: I remember this song for the movie "High Noon" staring Gary Cooper.

Ever since I heard the first whistle, I have been thinking about western music and although I do not think that GhostTown will be really western, I do think it will be a sad story which is true of a lot of Western music that I remember. Growing up in the Texas panhandle(ish), I think the first song my mother sang to me was Streets of Laredo and I still remember all the words. Western music is often a mournful story and gives you the feeling of vast skies and emptiness. I wouldn't mind a little of that from GhostTown. That is as long as it also makes me want to dance. It's going to be a surprise for sure.
