Actually, German is darn difficult to learn, but glad to hear your hubby had such an easy time with it. Good for him, that is impressive.
Within the Indo-European languages, German is pretty much at the top in complexity, and English at the bottom. Just the way it is. But coming from English, the closeness helps you, as compared to learning German when you are i.e. Arabic speaking (as all these million Syrian refugees in Germany have to do now)
None of this matters though, when it comes to just saying a few sentences, like Adam does.
Pretty safe bet to say that Adam probably did not sit down and study endless variations of declinations, and conjugations, and word order, and gender, and all that ugly stuff that makes it so hard to learn another language properly (other than English).
He mostly just uses his good ear and a good memory to get by.
Adam's German sounds very soft and sweet actually, fits well with his personality, lol.

Man! This is excellent German. He probably understands much more than he lets on, because this sentence is darn fluid. Way beyond just 'I took five lessons in high school...'. The strange thing is that it is southern sounding, which is not what he would have heard people say in and around Berlin, during his stay in 2003 there. He rolls the 'rrr' in the way that a Bavarian or Austrian would, if they were trying to speak high German, rather than their usual dialect. His 2003 stays in Munich, Mannheim and Linz, were supposedly each for only a couple of days, so I doubt that would have made such a difference. I would have assumed he picked up a Berliner accent, while there. But far from it. Maybe he took a few German classes while over there, and happened to have a teacher from the South of Germany. Who knows. But hearing this, I would be very cautious with German around Adam, if I wouldn't want him to understand me, lol. He probably can pick up much more of a conversation than we think. Just like in Spanish, which he also knows better than he lets on, I believe. Always humble, just like he is with other things. Quite amazing. Adam was in Germany for 6 months doing HAIR, going out to clubs, and said for a while the director made them do dialogue in German. Best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it. Plus he seems to have a good ear for languages, at least snippets.

Adam's German sounds very soft and sweet actually, fits well with his personality, lol. //a bit OT but this is part of my current research focus// The difficulty of learning a new language has a lot to do with what languages you already speak and what you have heard -- particularly when you were young (under 5 years old) and some personal characteristics -- experience + type of intelligence + sensory skills. It is different for everyone. English is about 25% Germanic and has enough similarities that it is relatively easy for most native English speakers to learn. Adam's grandparents (Leila's side) are/were Ashkenazic Jews and probably spoke Yiddish -- his great grandparents almost certainly did -- and Yiddish is a Germanic language and uses German grammar. At least he heard Yiddish growing up. Even if he never heard Yiddish, we know Adam has an excellent "ear". He can learn to repeat phrases and sound great. For English language speakers like Adam, the 10 hardest major languages to learn are usually considered: Mandarin (most widely spoken language, English is #2) Arabic Hungarian Japanese (Foreign Service says Japanese is hardest for native English speakers to learn) Korean Finnish Basque Navajo Icelandic Polish Here's a good characterization of language learning difficulty: www.effectivelanguagelearning.com/language-guide/language-difficulty. Once you move beyond the widely spoken languages, the world's most complex languages are spoken in the Amazon.

I like the Can't Go Home video!!! I don't know why there should be any angst about it. IMHO, it is just meant to be fun and not meant to be really deep or to dish Adam in any way. I also like the Can't Go Home video. However, I think there is a message in the video. Adam may not have been available due to scheduling. So, I think the idea was to replace Adam with the monkey. Adam likes to be a little subversive. Think about it.
