Queen rocks it out in Tel Aviv
Israeli fans enjoy the classic tunes blasted out by the rock band Queen, with Adam Lambert stepping in to fill Freddie Mercury's shoes; band covered by famous Israeli singer and songwriter Arkadi Duchin.

Exciting tributes, a new lead singer with plenty of charisma, and some affection for Hebrew were just part of Queen and Adam Lambert's concert in Tel Aviv on Monday night, attended by over 50,000 delighted fans at the Yarkon Park in Tel Aviv. Lambert was, of course filling in for late band lead singer Freddie Mercury, who passed away in 1991.
During the show, which lasted over two hours, the legendary rock band performed its greatest hits, accompanied by impressive light effects and video clips of Mercury, who would have turned 70 last week.

The legendary rock band opened with the song Seven Seas Of Rhye and Keep Yourself Alive before screaming at the audience ‘Tel Aviv!’ After warming up the crowd with four less well-known songs, the band played the 1978 classic,Fat Bottom Girls.

Lambert called for the Tel Aviv crowd to get its buts on bycicles, preparing those in attendance to hear a performance of Bicycle Race, but instead pivoted to sing Don't Stop Me Now, another one of the band's greatest hits.

Then, a giant chair was placed on stage, and the band went on to sing Killer Queen. Lambert then showed some Hebrew knowledge, saying "Lechaim" (cheers) to the crowd before taking a drink of water. "Erev tov" and "Toda raba" ("Good evening, and "thanks very much"), he continued.

Lambert continued to hold the crowd in the palm of his hand, asking how many of them were in love. He then said he had no life partner, asking if anyone could find him Somebody to Love. Guitarist Brian May then gave some affection to the Israeli audience, crying out "Shalom" and " Salam alaikum " ("Hello" in Hebrew and "peace be upon you" in Arabic). He even took photos with some excited fans.
He then said he heard that Israelis were quite good at singing, and began a solo rendition of the ballad Love of My Life. He asked for the crowd's help, saying it was for Freddie Mercury. While the crowd sang, the video screen showed an old Mercury performance of the song. May then presented drummer Roger Taylor, who came up front and sang These Are The Days Of Our Lives, again accompanied by Mercury videos.

The band dedicated the next song to another friend, and began playing Under Pressure, a Queen song written and performed in cooperation with legendary singer David Bowie, who passed away in January. A recording of Bowie's voice could be heard during the song's performance. Then, Lambert returned to the stage and sang Crazy Little Thing Called Love, continuing on to Another One Bites The Dust and I Want It All.
May then transitioned to a long instrumental verse, which eventually morphed into a rock version of Hava Nagila. The band then performed Who Wants to Live Forever and The Show Must Go On. Lambert excited the crowd by inserting the words "I've fallen in love with Tel Aviv" into the song I Want To Break Free. Then, it was the turn of legendary ballad Bohemian Rhapsody, with another Freddie Mercury video accompanying the song. At its peak, fireworks lighted the night sky.

Killer Queen rocks Tel Aviv
Two hours of old-school rock classics had fans enthralled with Queen's arrival to Israel.

Expectations are high when a band sings an almost-eponymous song about being "dynamite with a laser beam, guaranteed to blow your mind," but Queen has been managing to meet them for several decades.
The classic rockers played Tel Aviv for the first time Monday night, with former American Idol Adam Lambert taking the place of legendary frontman Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991 of complications from AIDS.
Mercury was a constant presence throughout the concert, with original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor each singing a song in his memory, and concert clips featuring the mustachioed frontman peppered throughout. About half of the performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" was a screening of the band’s classic music video with Mercury's voice, though Lambert sang some parts, as well.
Though he did not wear even one spandex jumpsuit, Lambert proved to be a worthy heir to Mercury's throne - and even sat on an actual throne while singing "Killer Queen." Lambert's glam-rock style and flamboyant moves paired with a voice that could tackle anything Queen has to offer with aplomb made him a seamless addition to the band for the past four years.
Queen and Lambert went through all the hits over two hours, and the audience was enthralled, from the opening piano riff of "Seven Seas of Rhye," through "Don't Stop Me Now" and "Somebody to Love," to the foot-stomping encore of "We Will Rock You" follows by "We Are The Champions." "Fat-Bottomed Girls" seemed to be the fan favorite, with the audience singing every word.
Though the song is 38 years old, it seemed au courant in an age when Kim Kardashian is the biggest star in the world, and it's pretty surprising Nicki Minaj or Iggy Azalea haven't sampled it yet.
Of course, it wouldn't be a concert in Tel Aviv without the singers pandering to the audience a bit. May played an extended guitar solo which included the rockingest version of Hava Nagila to hit the Jewish State, and, in a rarity at concerts in Israel, added an Arabic “salam aleikum” after his “shalom.”
Lambert, who's Jewish, seemed to have exhausted his Hebrew and Yiddish vocabularies with "shalom," "l'chaim" (said while raising a chalice), "erev tov" and "ma nishma," plus griping "oy vey zmir" and "oy gevalt" about the weather.
Tel Aviv humidity aside, Queen made good on its promise Monday night, when they sang “We Will Rock You.” Rock, they did.

Spirit of Freddie Mercury hovers as Queen plays TLV
American singer Adam Lambert joints original guitarist and drummer of UK band Queen for nostalgic romp before 50,000-strong crowd

Queen’s legendary lead singer may have gone on to the great stage in the sky, but his spirit pervaded Tel Aviv’s Yarkon Park on Monday, as his band electrified the more than 50,000 fans who had come from all over the country to hear some of the greatest hits the 1970’s and 1980’s produced.
Not that half-Jewish American singer Adam Lambert didn’t give a rocking rendition of hits ranging from Fat Bottomed Girls, to Don’t Stop Me Now and Killer Queen. He even managed a few words of Yiddish, light-heartedly complaining “Oy vey iz mir, oy gevald, it’s hot here!”
Connecting the young Lambert with Mercury — who died in 1991 from Aids-related complications, and who would have celebrated his 70th birthday last week — were two original members of the band, Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, white haired, but still energetic.
May told the crowd he’d heard that “in Israel, you sing quite well,” before launching into a haunting solo of the ballad Love of my Life and encouraging the crowd to accompany him “for Freddie.”

And it was the one and only Freddie – born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar – who featured on the larger-than-life video clips and whose voice could be heard intermittently over the amplifiers.

Mercury’s vocals could dance up four octaves and back, and his poetic genius gave us hits such as Bohemian Rhapsody.

Adam Lambert first connected with Queen in 2009, after May and Taylor had served as mentors on American Idol, in which Lambert finished as runner-up.

Mighty British ‘Queen’ Rock Band Seizes the Night, the Crowd and Traffic in Tel Aviv
The long-awaited, deeply delightful, hugely majestic classical rock band 'Queen' performed in Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park at last. All is right with the musical world.

The majestic, iconic, legendary classic rock group Queen performed Monday night in Tel Aviv, delighting fans and snarling traffic for miles around from east to west.
The mightiest of all rock bands since its formation in 1970, Queen is down to the two final original members, super-smooth guitarist Brian May and the always-vigorous drummer Roger Taylor.

But the British band is led by the completely talented 34-year-old Jewish American lead singer Adam Lambert – a man with glam and a range and falsetto to match the best that original front man Freddie Mercury had to offer. How much better can you get for a show in the Land?

Queen has for decades been known for its signature span of musical styles, and its ability to merge classical opera with rock, jazz and soul. ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is just one example of the musical mashup for which the band became justly famous, and which sank numerous vocalists who tried in vain to make the wild octave jump necessary to complete the entire piece.
True afficionados have loved it, and loved Queen from childhood straight into the geriatric generation. Ask any anglo living in any city in Israel. When the news broke in June that the group would at last perform in the Jewish State, the initial whispered rumors became a roar, along with concerns “the boycott” would get in the way. But doubters had little to fear.

Nothing stopped the band from coming to Israel: Not threats of boycotts, BDS nor deeply disapproving no-no looks from snooty rock colleagues like Roger Waters. And absolutely nothing stopped loyal fans from coming to the concert at Yarkon Park from the very ends of the country. The faithful streamed in to the concert in Tel Aviv from as far away as the tiny northeastern Negev city of Arad, near the southern tip of the Dead Sea.
“”Not go to a Queen concert? You’re kidding, right?” Esty, a loyal millenial fan told JewishPress.com in horror. She and a friend and the friend’s parents were on the highway, with cell phone reception limping but enthusiasm undiminished. “We’ll hike it if we have to.”
Police later informed fellow officers and first responders via scanners and on chat with some resignation that in the wake of the concert there was little that could be done about the problems with the traffic backups.
Following a performance by Queen, traffic was simply “jammed on the main artery from east to west,” one said on a chat. “The parking lots, Yarkon Park, the University train and the drive-in — forget it. They’re just packed.”
