Review: Queen + Adam Lambert still reigns in vintage rock. Freddie Mercury would be proud
Lambert is no Freddie Mercury, but he brings a winning theatrical presence that’s all his own
PUBLISHED : Thursday, 29 September, 2016, 8:03am
Queen without Freddie Mercury is, on the face of it, like champagne without the fizz: the quality of the end-product doesn’t really matter, because the defining ingredient is missing. No one, though, seems to have told that to the audience at AsiaWorld-Expo for the band’s first ever show in Hong Kong, where the vibe was very much one of uncomplicated, full-throated adulation.
From the crowd-pleasing opening, with early-career squall-rock classic Seven Seas of Rhye followed by mid-80s Live Aid-buster Hammer to Fall, through to the inevitable rousing one-two encore punch of We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions, Queen are able to reproduce songs of up 40-plus years’ vintage with astonishing fidelity. So many of them have such instantly recognisable intros that they bring the house down before they’ve even started: Fat Bottomed Girls, Don’t Stop Me Now, Somebody to Love, Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
Even though the band is now styled Queen + Adam Lambert, underlining the idea that no one is trying to replace Mercury, you can’t help being a bit nervous for singer Lambert. While he’s largely faithful to the original vocal phrasing, he wisely doesn’t try to imitate the great man, and possesses a winning, natural stage presence, a humorous theatricality, a nice line in audience banter and an enjoyable camp playfulness all of his own, the latter amped up to the max for a fan-fluttering, throne-occupying Killer Queen. And Lambert really does have the most staggering set of pipes, particularly evident during an eerily perfect rendition of Who Wants to Live Forever, effortlessly hitting high notes that even Mercury habitually left alone live.
Alongside Lambert guitarist Brian May looks every inch the rockin’ astrophysics professor. Although his guitar could sometimes do with being slightly higher in the mix, May wrangles experimental noise out of his guitar as part of a 10-minute solo intro to Tie Your Mother Down, and performs a moving solo acoustic version of Mercury’s Love of My Life, partly accompanied by video footage of Mercury singing; a virtual Mercury also performs a verse of, naturally, Bohemian Rhapsody, while the song’s original video is recreated on stage’s big screens for its operatic mid-section. Drummer Roger Taylor, the only other original band member, meanwhile, has acquired the look at a cuddly middle-aged Ewok behind the skins, stepping out to take lead vocals on A Kind of Magic and the David Bowie part on Under Pressure.
Even AsiaWorld at its vibe-crushing best can’t suck the joy out of this one. The main source of the band’s unique sparkle might no longer be with us, but Queen are still a very fine vintage.

EXCLUSIVE: Adam Lambert Channels Meat Loaf Behind the Scenes of the 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' TV
Adam Lambert Nails 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' Ballads Behind the Scenes
Raphael Chestang , WZZM 7:19 PM. EDT September 28, 2016
Adam Lambert is taking over for Meat Loaf in Fox's TV reimagining of the 1975 cult classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and ET experienced all the Transylvania madness during a visit to the set!
Lambert dons a punk Elvis/zombie look for the role of Eddie in the remake, jumping off stages and singing "Hot Patootie."
"Eddie is a horndog," Lambert told ET. "He's nasty."
Joining Lambert is Laverne Cox, Victoria Justice, Ryan McCartan, Annaleigh Ashford and Christina Milian.
"I'm starring in it, so it has to be really sexy," said Cox, who stars as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, originally played by Tim Curry. "The scale of the production is so huge. It's top-notch."
The two-hour television event follows a young couple whose car troubles lead them to stumble upon an annual Transylvanian science convention held by Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
Justice and McCartan play the two sweethearts originally depicted by a young Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick. Actor and singer Staz Nair plays Rocky Horror, the muscle-bound specimen created by Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
"This is the only industry where my job interview requires me to come in my boxers and dance," Nair pointed out.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show premieres Oct. 20 on Fox.

Adam Lambert has the X Factor
Vanessa Williams - The West Australian on September 28, 2016, 12:41 pm
Sitting in the judge’s chair during The X Factor: Next Generation auditions in Sydney brought back a flood of memories for Adam Lambert.
The 34-year-old singer recalls the exact moments of his American Idol audition in 2009, where he performed Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody to then judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.
“I kept remembering what it felt like to be in their shoes, to walk into a room and be nervous, to be hopeful and have all this pressure on yourself to do well,” Lambert says by phone from London, where he is rehearsing for the Queen + Adam Lambert tour.
“I was 27 when I did my audition, so I auditioned a lot later than a lot of the other contestants (on Idol). I kind of relate to that idea that they’ve been watching the show for many years before they were finally ready.”
Despite placing runner-up on Idol’s eighth season, Lambert has gone on to pave a hugely successful music career.
With three albums under his belt, the openly gay musician has sold more than five million singles worldwide.
To top it off, Lambert started touring with Queen in 2012, performing the band’s biggest hits in place of the late Freddie Mercury for adoring fans in Europe, the UK, US, Australia and now Asia.
After wrapping the final two legs of the Queen summer tour at the end of the month, Lambert will head Down Under to resume filming for The X Factor’s eighth season (the auditions were filmed earlier this year).
Lambert joins Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea and seasoned judge Guy Sebastian on the panel, stepping in to replace last year’s celebrity judges Chris Isaac and James Blunt.
Model turned TV presenter Jason Dundas will also be joining the series this season in place of former host Luke Jacobz.
“I have kind of wanted to do something along these lines for a while now,” Lambert says.
“The X Factor has got a special format where you get to mentor the contestants ... I grew up doing a lot of theatre, and I was in this theatre group as a kid. As I grew older and became more seasoned within the company, I became like a student director and I started to direct things and coach the kids.
“So I think when this opportunity presented itself, that really appealed to me.”
This, along with his experience on Idol, will shape how he approaches his critiques as a judge.
“I always try to be sensitive and aware of what their experience might be but I’ve also vowed to be very honest and direct,” he says.
“I’ll try to do it in a constructive way, I’m not mean. I think in the long run, if you’re a performer and you’re really serious about it and want this as your career, I think honesty is the one thing that will make you grow.”
What also excites Lambert is getting stuck into the live shows.
“I think that will be a lot of fun,” he says.
“I grew up doing theatre and over the past seven years being in the pop music world, and in the rock world, I’ve gotten a really interesting pace of what’s happening on tour stages and on award-show stages, so I have a lot of ideas and things that I want to play with.
“I want to help these contestants have fun and be innovative and really surprise the audience.”

Asked how Australian talent rates against the US, Lambert says he had no idea what to expect when he went into the audition process.
“I didn’t know what to expect and I saw a lot of really gifted singers,” he says.
“I think the talent we’ve seen has been really impressive.
“I love Australia, just as a location being on tour over there and hanging out there for the auditions, the energy in Australia is great.
“People are very friendly and very laid back, I think it creates a great environment for creative people because there’s like a freedom and ease about it and I think that’s one of the things you really need to express yourself.
“But what’s exciting is, there’s some contestants this year that are so ready. I kind of view it as my opportunity to polish them up and help them get to the next step. I really wanted to put through people that I felt were ready to become professionals.”
Lambert describes his fellow Aussie judges as “fun” and “down to earth” but says there is room for plenty of friendly competition.
“It’s funny because I think as we’ve got more comfortable with each other we are more likely to call each other out,” he laughs.
“I noticed the last trip down there, towards the end we were really at each other a little bit more, which is good.
“I think it’s all in the spirit of fun, we were all having a great time, and we’re really invested in these singers. We all want the same thing — we all want to win. I don’t think they know it yet but I’m going to win.”
Mystery still surrounds the identity of the fourth “underdog” judge, with rumours swirling that Mel B will return to the show following her controversial exit in 2013 to appear on Nine’s AGT.
But Lambert wasn’t about to reveal who it might be.
“I think you’ll just have to tune in and find out,” he teases.
“I just found out and I was surprised. They kept us in the dark too, to be honest with you.”
