I agree, he is a show-off. Totally. Probably has been since he was a tot and sang that high note and held it forever in Fiddler on the Roof, and got his first huge audience reaction. CTMBTM is gorgeously, insanely over the top, and all for show. I have heard many singers perform that song, and none milk that note and phrase like Adam did, at the young age 22. I also notice breathing since I became enamored with Adam. In particular, I notice when a singer takes a breath; if it is at the end of a phrase, extended past the natural end of the phrase for effect, or in the middle of a phrase or even the middle of a word, because the singer has run out of breath. Adam breathes for interpretation as well as support. It's one of the things I love about him as an artist. When Chynna sang Amazing Grace, the thing I disliked about the performance was her phrasing. She took frequent breaths without regard to the meaning of the phrase. It is a tough song to sing BECAUSE the phrases are so long. Ideally, I would phrase it as Amazing grace! / How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me/ If I needed an additional breath, I think I would sing "how sweet the sound that saved/ a wretch like me" By singing thru the musical phrase that ends with "sound" and breathing after "saved" it adds emphasis to the wondrous act of being SAVED. Many people (Chynna included), tho' sing, "Amazing grace/ how sweet/ the sound/ that saved/ a wretch/ like me" Broken up like that, the meaning behind the lyrics is lost. Adam THINKS about where he wants to take a breath. He is not perfect. Occasionally, I will hear him break up a phrase, not for meaning, but for lack of breath to sustain the entire phrase. It always surprises me. He did it a couple of times during EITN. The first few times he sings "danger by day but you're evil in the night" in one breath. Perfect. Later in the song, he sings "danger by/ day but you're evil in the night." Why? A bit tired? Distracted? For whatever reason, he must have figured he didn't have enough breath to sing the entire phrase. But, he does an interesting breath pattern. The musical phrase break would be after "day". Instead, he sneaks the breath BEFORE "day" so that he can sustain the rest of the phrase in a connected way. Always thinking.
Hi Cassie, since you notice his breathing, I thought that I heard him taking a breath where he usually doesn't in "Don't Stop Me Now"....I can't remember which show...it was "call me/ Mr. Fahrenheit"...I noticed it immediately since he usually sings it in one breath. To make sure I wasn't imagining things, I played other recordings and I definitely don't hear the the pause. Just wondering if you or anyone else had noticed it also during this last tour. Now that you mention it, I think I do remember that. I have been watching KQ and STL from the Bangkok concert, and he also does some different phrasing at the beginning of KQ. She keeps Moet et Chandon / In her pretty cabinet / 'Let them eat cake' / she says / Just like Marie Antoinette A built-in remedy/ For Kruschev and Kennedy At anytime an invitation You can't /decline I think the breaths were all intentional, particularly before "she says". The brief pause there clarifies that he is quoting Ms. Queen, rather like the comma you would see in print. But then he connects the last three lines in one breath..... not sure why, as breathing after "kennedy" would make sense lyrically and musically. He almost makes it to the end of the last line, only to have to sneak a breath before the last word. A wonky phrasing that caught my ear. Don't know why it stuck out to me, but, I am sure it tells you a lot about how closely I listen to everything he sings, and how familiar I am with every nuance. This segment was so much fun in Bangkok. Worth another viewing! www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0NFHGJHSPc

I heard a breath break that sounded out of place, too. (My ears are way more "trained" now). Did a mental double take. I thought Adam's voice sounded incredible as usual, and the costuming and stage design was exciting and dramatic, but for me the timing and rhythm seemed really off-I couldn't put my finger on it; maybe I was unfairly comparing it to the perfect and tight performances from the TOH tour.

I don't think the timing was off, I just think the band, and the chorus seemed to be slower the it usually is. So it felt off because of that. Used to it being more tighter and faster. The audience in OZ woulden't of noticed the difference anyway. Adams breath phrasing was perfect as usual, but yeah he did take a few more brethes, to sustain the note. Also maybe he has not sung in a while, I know he just came off Queen LOL. But you know has been sitting their for 3 weeks, before was not singing. Great performance nonetheless. Unbiastly probably the best going around in the music industry atm. Just needs that big radio hit. Loved the new arrangment though. That felt like old Glam Rock Adam. I am actually hoping Adam returns to Glam Rock in Album 4, FYE was his highest selling album. Correct me if I am wrong.

Not sure how Adam would feel about Ghost Town being used at a HeWhoCannot amed Rally, seeing he endorsed Hillary Clinton. But hey exposure is exposure, they say ll publicity is good publicty, unless its Donald HeWhoCannot amed lol. But that is good exposure for GT.
