I think Adam stated that he didn't/doesn't have the patience it takes to learn an instrument. About singing I think he said he put work into it but it did come along nicely, more easily or something along those lines. I would like to talk about Adams guitarists. What I've realized but maybe I'm totally off, I might have to watch a couple videos just for THAT reason. Playing with Brian May, and Tommy Joe Ratliff Adam reacts to the guitar, he really feels it. It's like he's having sex with the guitar riffs. ( I hope this doesn't come over inappropriate) I kind of missed that with Adam Ross. I shows a bit in the solo during Lucy but not much else. I just want someone for Adam that can "rock his socks" *lol* Am I totally off or what do others think? Adam did say that he didn't have the patience it takes to learn and instrument -- but I have always be skeptical of that. In 2011, Adam said he can't read music. I doubt Adam has learned how to read music since 2011. During the GNTour Neil said that Adam cannot play music by ear. Adam also said Neil can play piano by ear but he (Adam) could not. So to play an instrument Adam would have to learn to read music. I think that might be really hard for him. Lot's of vocalists and singer-songwriters can't read music -- one that comes to mind is Taylor Swift. I have always been skeptical of Adam saying he can't do something. Because I think he only says he can do something when he is really really good at it. He always says he doesn't speak German, but I have heard him answer a question on a German radio show without waiting for the translation, I have heard him make a joke in German and also say a couple of sentences which of course he could have learned by heart, but they sounded pretty good to me. Let's just say, I would hesitate to say something in German that I would't want Adam to understand. And yet he says he doesn't know German. I have no idea whether that means Adam can read sheet music, but it is certainly possible he can do a lot more than he tells the world.

I'd love to see what you have mentioned above...Adam spent quite a bit of time in Germany...I'd be careful in general in assuming someone doesn't understand me^^ I totally agree with you that Adam only says he can do something when he's really good. I think Adam is aware that there are people that speak two or three languages to the extend they each could be their mother tongue. Same with instruments...he works with people that play instruments probably from childhood up... I for instance I say I don't play piano even though with a little previous knowledge from guitar I had no problem presenting my family with songs on the piano on christmas from a level 1 christmas book...but there's just so much more to it than that...

Interesting discussion about reading music and how being an instrumentalist might affect a person's ability to write songs. I have to admit I was was surprised by several posts that said a person could learn to read music in a day or other short time span. Being a musician and long-time music teacher, I have not seen that as a possibility. I think it is possible for people to learn the names of lines and spaces on the music staff and to understand rhythmic notation in a short span of time. However, I have yet to meet a student of any age (kid or adult) who can be fluent in reading within days even if they totally understand it intellectually. I think that my ability to understand how to pronounce Italian is above average for someone who doesn't speak it. I can sound it out and pronounce it with some sort of Italian accent. I know how the vowels and most consonants sound. I could read (pronounce) a paragraph of an Italian novel, but that doesn't mean I can read the novel--with any comprehension at all. I feel that Adam, because of his training and experience, does understand music notation to a certain extent, like my Italian. But he may not be able to use his knowledge of music reading to effectively translate printed music into audio sounds. That's ok. I have a brother who learned to read music for a couple years as a kid but was totally turned off by it. He's very bright. When he picked up guitar and bass guitar at age 18, he learned by ear. He later decided he needed to understand music theory better and can talk circles around me and many highly trained musician. He still struggles to read notation--slow and frustrating. Adam would certainly be able to "create" songs using computers. Heck, that's what most of the DJs do who apparently are not instrumentalists (trained or not). However, that mostly results in music that is simplistic--but popular. Someone posted a page of printed music in the last day or so (I don't even know which day or who did it). Here are my observations: - Someone with elementary knowledge might be able to name the notes, identify rhythms, and maybe slowly play it.
- A person who is more experienced, could play it or sing it and perform it.
- I have a lot of training and experience reading music, so after scanning at it for about 10 seconds without playing it can tell you that the excerpt posted is from "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" for string quartet by Mozart.
So I think a more pertinent question (if anyone cares) is how literate is Adam at reading music?
