11. My Melancholy Blues (Mercury)
Next up....and I think I'll save the most likely one left til the end....so instead we'll go for a less likely choice:
My Melancholy Blues
Now I'm thinking this won't be played as it's sooo Freddie. It's mostly Freddie on piano and vocals...some nice tasteful bass and drums but mostly it's just such a Freddie track, I doubt they'd tackle it...
My Melancholy Blues
Written by: Freddie Mercury
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead vocals, piano
John Deacon - bass guitar
Roger Taylor - drums
Another party's over
And I'm left cold sober
My baby left me for somebody new
I don't wanna talk about it
Want to forget about it
Wanna be intoxicated with that special brew
So come and get me
Let me
Get in that sinking feeling
That says my heart is on an all time low - So
Don't expect me
To behave perfectly
And wear that sunny smile
My guess is I'm in for a cloudy and overcast
Don't try and stop me
Because I'm heading for that stormy weather soon
I'm causing a mild sensation
With this new occupation
I'm permanently glued
To this extraordinary mood so now move over
Let me take over
With my melancholy blues
I'm causing a mild sensation
With this new occupation
I'm in the news
I'm just getting used to my new exposure
So come into my enclosure
And meet my
Melancholy blues
And I'm left cold sober
My baby left me for somebody new
I don't wanna talk about it
Want to forget about it
Wanna be intoxicated with that special brew
So come and get me
Let me
Get in that sinking feeling
That says my heart is on an all time low - So
Don't expect me
To behave perfectly
And wear that sunny smile
My guess is I'm in for a cloudy and overcast
Don't try and stop me
Because I'm heading for that stormy weather soon
I'm causing a mild sensation
With this new occupation
I'm permanently glued
To this extraordinary mood so now move over
Let me take over
With my melancholy blues
I'm causing a mild sensation
With this new occupation
I'm in the news
I'm just getting used to my new exposure
So come into my enclosure
And meet my
Melancholy blues
- The song was played live only through 1978, and I doubt would ever be performed again unless covered by someone. It's a very Freddie song.
ALTERNATIVE RELEASED VERSION:
BBC SESSION 6 VERSION
- ESSENTIAL listening.
- Released on the 2011 Island Deluxe Remaster of News Of The World as a bonus track.
- This version has Brian May playing a bit of guitar over the top of it and Freddie gives a very loose performance which comes across very well. My favorite version.
OFFICIALLY RELEASED LIVE VERSION:
- Live at Houston in 1977, this was released on iTunes as a bonus video from the 2011 Island Deluxe Remaster of News Of The World
PERSONAL NOTES:
- A very laid back song. Good for wine, candles, and maybe a bath
this song suits Adam to a tee!
It's vocally where his voice can shine brilliantly, and story telling Adam could perform this sitting back in a lounge chair, just telling us how he feels. In fact, I think that when it comes to this melancholy side, Adam shares every bit with Freddie, and could probably beautifully perform this. With simple facial expressions, and lyrical accents as he is capable of giving, he could bring the house down with a laid back performance with just piano, a few delicately thrown in cymbals, and otherwise just voice. Brian and Roger both get a break, somewhere in the middle.
My dream would be, Adam performs this, saying that looking through all the songs that Freddie penned, asked himself what spoke to him the most, and he happened to have found this gem and just wants to perform it, bring it to life in honor of Freddie. And then sing it just as gently and pensive as it sounds in the original (no guitars from Brian, pls).
It would be a quiet, but absolutely stunning moment. Even a rock concert cannot go from only high to high, there need to be quieter moments. This could be one of them.
I know, it is just a dream, and probably not realistic. But it could be wonderful.
