My guess (and only my guess) is that they wanted to have something out quickly before the Oscars performance so he had something available to the public and also as a talking point in any red carpet interviews. However, they were not ready to move up the entire timeline they already had in place for the first single, or they simply weren't ready for that when the Oscars got solidified. And the media coverage was great, but if they are going to spend any $$$ on anything, I'd rather it be on the first real singe. As pretty as this song is, I don't see it as a radio contender, which is usually why buzz singles are ones that aren't ever meant for radio and released 'just for fans' or 'previews'. It's lovely, but very much an album track, to me.

I'm back.. Ok this article is great ,but nowhere that I can see ,does it say that Adam also has a solo career with three albums out fourth on It's way..sounds like his only career is with Queen. I'm hoping for a blending of his two careers.

But I think Adam can release and have great success with a beautiful ballad on radio the same way some others have (Ed, Sam, Adele, Bruno, Weeked, etc. No reason why he should be cut off from anything. It is more than just his fans really loving this song from him. The difference for him is if they will play it in a big way but that is a question for anything that he might release. Sometimes doing something different might work out great. I don't think anyone can know how well it could do without trying. But it is not the single so wishing for radio play means little anyway.

VERY interesting article. Great analysis of Adam's career so far, with all its ups and downs. Great praise for his talents. Ends on a hopeful note, IMO. Read it if you have a few minutes!

It's lovely, but very much an album track, to me. No doubt you are right but it really seriously begs the question...just what makes a song a single 'contender'. We often bemoan all the attention Sam Smith gets, and the number of #1 hits of his...and as many have pointed out, this is most assuredly in SS territory...he could very well have put this out and have it do very very well...so why do you say this is not a 'radio contender'? I agree with what you say about timing et al..but I seriously do not understand where you are coming from with the other.... Not asking in a challenging way at all...just wanting some understanding. Out of curiosity...any chance it could get some 'official' love later, after and if a first single takes off? He says the others on the album are very different...I hope not all are....this is imho the best he has put out ever, lyric wise and vocally...albeit Shady is still my fave of all time I think... ...but this is a serious contender on that...:0

True, but only he an his team know what the rest of the tracks sound like. And Adam himself already said no other track on the album sounds like this one. Perhaps it's not the song they wanted to try for radio (if there is a radio plan) as representative of the bigger picture. And it may not be that it's a ballad, but this particular ballad. Which is a solid album track.
