Someone in yesterday's thread asked about the timing of the special. Why now? Good question, and I don't know the answer, but IMO the timing is fortuitous even though the North American tour is, for all intents and purposes, sold out. The audience for the Rhapsody Tour will be different from those for the more recent tours due to the presence of new Queen fans from the movie. Those people will still be in the "honeymoon phase" of their fandom, completely enamored of Freddie, and likely know little or nothing of Adam's history with the band. Prime "He's no Freddie" people. I hope some of them watched the special and will walk into those concerts with more understanding and appreciation for what Adam brings to the band - and that it is due to Adam that they will have the opportunity to see Queen at all. Good point. Heightens for new people who found the band via the movie. I think the timing is because it fit ABC's schedule. They could shop the special around to different networks but it's the network who proposes the timing usually in a take it or leave it fashion. A two day punch tied in heavily with Idol with mentoring on the first night and taking over the usual Idol spot on the 2nd night. And plus a Finale performance? Who else has ever guest starred on Idol on two different weeks? Although Idol itself hasn't done a great job of advertising Adam's appearances other than the special, but then although they want the tie in they also can't afford to make it the Adam Lambert show. Got to keep some focus on the current contestants. I've enjoyed this year's contestants and have thought they had a really good bunch. But after his mentoring on commanding the stage I watched his performances youtube again, for the umpteenth time, and yeah, Adam broke Idol. They've never had anyone on like him before or since. Not that the show isn't enjoyable - although this vote before the show is over format is popularity driven not performance driven - but just that nobody else has both the stage presence and the voice in one package. I love the current stage and think it's really cool looking, it's also filled up with lots of musicians, it's smaller, it's more clubby. In comparison Adam had to fill acres of stage all by his lonesome.

In the documentary, when the showed the Iheart portion, I swooned. Adam looked like a combination of a model and a rock star. And you could just tell he knew how good he looked. The confidence was electric. And as usual, he was on fire that night with his performance.
ETA: Agree with Jablea. ABC's call. Tie in to Idol and soon after Queen and Adam did the Oscars on ABC. It was great timing for them. Glad they did it for whatever reason, lol.

I don't know what it was about that night. He always looks and performs great but that concert was just off the friggin' charts in both departments. Was that one of the first times out that he was no longer hiding behind heavy makeup that was no longer dulling his glow?

My take on the doc airing is totally different. I think this was the agreement made as payment for them performing on the Oscars. Brian alluded to some drama. Adam said they weren’t, then they were. The Oscars needed a big opener having no host and something to pump up as must see tv. I could totally see Jim Beach saying this is what it will cost ABC, two hours of airtime for their documentary. And Philymack added while you are at it, we want two Idol slots for Adam. Abc found a week before they started The Bachelorette, so it all worked out. They got decent ratings for the doc and good press. Was a win, win, win for everyone. Jim Beach has always been a tough negotiator and business man
