Maybe she didn't know what "drop out" means and thought he was telling her to get lost? Yeah, that’s what I think, too.

Yeah, that’s what I think, too. Why, what does it mean? Do people not recognize the quote? Adam didn't just come up with it. It is from Timothy Leary back in 1967. The height of the hippie culture days. Not a dis, for sure. Just a reference.

yes guys thank you, i did find that it was a refference to back then, but I didn't find anything concluding to what it means, what the person who usees it actually wants to say. Sorry, that I'm only 28 and just have never shown that much interest in the Hippie era, that i know the slang.
Sorry but Adam can't expect everyone to simply know all the slang and phrases he uses. Sorry, but at times he does live in his own little world.

Do people not recognize the quote? Adam didn't just come up with it. It is from Timothy Leary back in 1967. The height of the hippie culture days. Not a dis, for sure. Just a reference. First: I like the song and think, that the video is interesting and you need to think about it to get it. I didn’t care about drug references, because for one I didn’t see that explicitly and for second it’s Adam’s world. And it’s his video. I didn’t understand Adam’s answer as being offensive. But it looks like I didn‘t get the meaning either. I don’t even know, who Timothy Leary is or was and I don’t care enough to look it up. So no, I have still no idea, what that quote is. That was wayyyy before my time. And in a different country and language. I won’t criticize Adam for using it. But conversations via twitter or even here on Atop can easily go wrong, just because we have many, completely different backgrounds. That’s unfortunately the natural limit of written conversations. And it’s even harder with people, that you don’t know. Sometimes we all -including that fan - need that as a reminder. This way we won’t take a comment (like Adam’s in that case) as a personal insult.

For anyone curious about the meaning of the quote it's here - www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=turn%20on%2C%20tune%20in%2C%20drop%20outA term coined by Timothy Leary to describe the psychedelic experience. Leary explains it in his book Flashbacks as such “Turn on’ meant go within to activate your neural and genetic equipment. Become sensitive to the many and various levels of consciousness and the specific triggers that engage them. Drugs were one way to accomplish this end. ‘Tune in’ meant interact harmoniously with the world around you – externalize, materialize, express your new internal perspectives. Drop out suggested an elective, selective, graceful process of detachment from involuntary or unconscious commitments. ‘Drop Out’ meant self-reliance, a discovery of one’s singularity, a commitment to mobility, choice, and change. Unhappily my explanations of this sequence of personal development were often misinterpreted to mean ‘Get stoned and abandon all constructive activity.”

I don't quite get it either and I didn't see anything from Adam that struck me as offensive or rude. I guess it comes down to the fact that not everybody likes everything that he creates or does or says. C'est la vie!! I am sure that Adam will gain a good number of new fans with this new era It is a Bit dismissive. I see the point of the fan. Is drugs, Party, escapism new for Adam? No...but being a fan doesnt mean being a sheep and blindly yes-ing everything.I've never been drawn to Adams Party, escapism side much. I accept it and wish him the best but it's just Not something i can relate to much or "understand", it's just not how i work. I understand that it's something i don't understand and it's also ok. Adam has opened my eyes that way. Just to point it out that Adam has never referred to those times as his glory times. The message that sometimes you have to go through the mud to come Out the other side is important though. I agree that it's more than okay to not jump up and down at everything just because we once "signed up" to be part of this fandom. We all have different tastes and different things that we feel sensitive about and why not communicate that? However, those who voice continuous disapproval or frustration would probably do themselves and everybody else a favor it they took a break or left the fandom. I haven't met anybody here who appears to fall into that category. About NE the music video... I wish I had listened to the song first before viewing, but I love it(!) and I do not see it as Adam glorifying drugs and partying either. It goes way deeper than that and I think it takes time to fully appreciate the complexity of it. "New Eyes" is the first music video since the FYE era that I find interesting and feel drawn to, and it might turn out to be my favorite. There were just too many music videos from the TP and TOH era that I could not connect with at all, GT included.

I also thought it meant ‘Get stoned and abandon all constructive activity'.

blackqueen65, Thanks for the explanation of "tune in, turn on, drop out." I remember it well. It is true that "drop out" was not meant to be a negative thing. As you said, it referred to getting out of the current society and moving on to societal change. But that meaning has gotten lost over the years. I've never been a fan of Timothy Leary and the whole LSD thing, but the original meaning of his saying should be made clear to those who either forgot or never knew.
