Wow, looks like he changed up WWTLF again...how does he do that? Thanks for posting that, Cassie. I've been trying to avoid listening to that song, because it always makes me so emotional and there has been so much sad stuff happening lately.
And I agree, he overwhelms my senses...there is such power in his voice.
He's unbelievable.

cassieAm I dreaming or did he sing the first verse (~1:00) of WWTLF slightly differently than he usually does? It seems lighter, maybe more into the upper part of the vocal box. Less harmonics maybe? I'm not making any sense because I don't have the vocabulary to explain what I think I am hearing ... :-S So, I went down and talked to my child who has a degree in liguistics. I tried to sing a single note but moved the sound around in my mouth to show them what I was talking about and they said that was indeed the same note, but a different vowel because the one of the main differences between vowels is the harmonics. 💡 That's it! Adam is singing the vowels differently and I had noticed it but didn't think it relevant and the ones he is using have less harmonics. My child showed me all kinds of frequency charts because there is no such thing as a simple answer, but the frequency patterns made it obvious to me.

It makes me very happy to see an established metal musician like Mike Portnoy (with lots of followers) acknowledge Adam's extraordinary talent.

My child showed me all kinds of frequency charts because there is no such thing as a simple answer, but the frequency patterns made it obvious to me. Generally, during this tour he has sung that first verse more delicately and with an increased purity. It gives him more room to increase the intensity and power from beginning to end of the song. I love it. Adam frequently sings rock with a certain what they call "twang" to his voice. It makes it sound more piercing and more powerful. Many singers do that, but Adam is able to simultaneously retain the pinging resonance and pure tone to the sound, where many other singers sound strained or pushed when they add the power. You know how you sound when you push a heavy object and this kind of grunt comes out? But Adam, because of his excellent technique, can achieve that power and slightly metallic sound to his voice without it sounding forced. The sound you hear on the first verse of WWTLF, and also when he sings "Doing Alright" is his natural voice, unembellished with that rock edge, and without intensity. Many singers would then sound weak or breathy, but not Adam. He has mastered the ability to produce the sound in what singers call the "mask", or the front of his mouth and sinuses, giving it the ring and purity. The notes just float like bubbles. Rather like when you sing in the shower or in a cave and the sound echoes and bounces off the hard surfaces, making your voice sound fantastic. Yes, it is about producing the vowels with the right shape of mouth and tongue. Done correctly, it produces not less harmonics, but more "harmonious" harmonics. Secondary tones and vibrations that are mathematically in sync with the prime note. The harmonics are all lined up and stacked on top of each other. They don't clash which gives a rough or dull rasp or burr to the tone. Don't know if I am making any sense. Let me try this. Take a glass you buy at the dollar store and tap it with a knife. You hear a note that is dull and more like a thunk. That's most people's voice without training on how to find that resonance in their mask. Adam's voice is like taking a glass made of delicate, fine crystal. Tap it and you hear this beautiful, pure note that continues to ring for several seconds. Angels on ice skates I think one person wrote.

The harmonious harmonics with "secondary tones and vibrations that are mathematically in sync with the prime note. The harmonics are all lined up and stacked on top of each other" is exactly what my child was showing me in the frequency charts. Angel on ice skates is still the most awesome description of Adam's voice 🥰

LOL Agree...but this suit would be the best of the suits that seem to be obligatory now. I’m forever in mourning for the SaveMe trousers and the Versace leather outfit.

Actually, Lurleene, that would be an interesting conversation, if you could get an interview with some of the radio higher ups or some of the label execs. But I doubt you'd get honest answers, since they couldn't exactly admit to bias against the LGBT artists.I completely agree with you. But someone should put their butts on the spot and on the record anyway. But they never do. They always want the LGBT artists to explain how difficult it is and what they think about it. If those artists, including Adam, could make the changes they would have done it by now. Tho, being visible and a role models are very helpful and important. But the gatekeepers are in charge and they decide who they let thru. When, how often and how much. Excellent point Lurleene.
