Well isn't that interesting. They'll give up when he doesn't sell of bunch of records for them. So they're letting him have a homecoming but it won't be televised? I guess they are counting this a promo for his new album. But it would be Idol that pays for the homecoming; the travel & accomodations, security, motorcades. Sounds like a wash to me. I live in the Santa Cruz area, where JD is from. From what I can tell from the various stories in the local press (don't know JD or anyone who does know him) The local beach/boardwalk planned a big to-do with him singing on their beach stage accompanied by a popular group (older guys, not metal, play Beatles covers) that he sang with now and again, and a visit to a children's theater group in which he performed frequently as a child, and a bit of a parade through town. (Not in that order.) Anyway, Big disappointment when he didn't make the final 3 and many, many local people and businesses wanted to go ahead and have the celebration. First they had to get AI to let him go home in time for the celebration. (I guess if you are voted off at this point there are some reasons why you have to stay a few days.) A lot of the costs are minimal (visit with theater group to speak with young kids there - I know, does that sound familiar or what???) or covered - at least mostly - by local businesses. Getting a bunch of people to come to the beach stage= sales of food and drink... So I think AI didn't have to put a lot of money into it and it wasn't their idea. Does "won't be shown" on the show = "won't be filmed"? That would make sense. Local TV may film it. Perhaps AI is paying for flight from LA??? Oh, and on that Zoiks article, what is said about Adam is not bad this time. Perhaps written by different person than before? (I didn't remember previous stuff and clicked...)

Thanks jazzrocks and mys*&@^#r! Mys*&@^#r I knew you were WAY Idol knowledgeable and would probs know about the studio versions and if JD managed to pull off decent recordings.
I did know about the studio versions done previous years, and do have some of Adam's, so won't be needing to take mys*&@^#r up on her sweet offer, but was not sure if they still did them after all the changes for this year's Idol. If I had thought about it for a minute, though, I would have realized that of course they would make studio versions - it's part of how the show makes $$$$!
I guess I just got curious about James Durbin because from what little I know, and much of that is just from comments on Atop, I'm thinking he will have many obstacles to overcome to reach success, even if he is the winner.
Mys*&@^#r, when I rode with you into LA for the Nokia show I remember you talking about various Idols and how some work harder, seem more driven to achieve success. I think a lot of the contestants must be surprised at how hard one needs to work, how frustrating it can be, how much input from the management and recording team one has to absorb-consider-compromise/ornot-etc. Guess I'm just looking at the current group of contestants, hearing what people are saying about the judges not giving enough constructive criticism, and thinking, boy, do they ever have some surprises coming! How difficult it must be to go on tour, be in the Idol bubble, have people cheering for you, saying you're great, then, end of tour it is often no where near as rosy or as easy as one thought.
Just makes me curious. Thanks again for the info.

Can someone who knows things about AI answer a question for me ?
Background: I'm not an Idol watcher, any season. (Watched Adam on youtube during his season after I heard about him.) I live in the Santa Cruz, CA area, which is where James Durbin lives. I don't know him at all, and haven't watched him on Idol, but notice articles in the local paper about him. Usually I just skim those articles quickly.
Anyway, recently the article about him had to do with the local beach/boardwalk getting ready to have a concert on their outdoor stage if he is in the final 3 and has the usual "home visit." For some reason that made me decide to actually watch a couple youtubes of him that were posted with the online newspaper article.
OK, he's got some good points, but some clear weaknesses as well. He is certainly inconsistent and definitely goes out of the range where he can control his voice well. I was wondering if the contestants this year make a "studio version" of the songs besides the tv performance, and if so, on those studio versions is James staying in the range of better voice control?
After people saying that he didn't follow the suggestions from Iovine I was wondering if he followed whatever direction he received behind the scenes to make a better recorded song than some of the performances. This will be something he will have to do if he gets a contract.
It doesn't matter, just curious. I wish him well, but I think he will have to work and grow to create success for himself. In the past, before playing in indie/alternative bands, my son drummed in a heavy metal band. They were pretty darned good, played regionally, got some good write ups in online metal mags. Anyway, my sense of the metal scene is that coming from AI would be considered an obstacle one would have to overcome - just not "outsider-ish" enough - no cred.
Thanks if you have any info. peace&love

On Wednesday 4th May 2011, @adamssangel said: @gqfashion I don't mind that GQ feels that it can comment with authority on the fashion scene or compare the sartorial styles of the modern male, but to add the personal, undercutting, mean-spirited intention in your comments to Adam Lambert in your recent Tweet, calling his fashion choice at the ASCAP Awards "the shocking, gay vampire shtick", is going decidedly too far. I'm sure you know that all of Adam Lambert's fans consider him one of the best-dressed, and certainly, the most beautiful man who has ever been in the entertainment industry, and the nicest. I wonder what GQ Fashion had in mind by shooting these remarks across the bow at Adam (and to his fandom)? And why did you mention his "gayness" as being part of his "shtick"? Many of Adam Lambert's fans have suffered in silence reading all the myriad comments directed against Adam in the pettiest way, but really, yours takes the cake. At the very least, I think GQ should apologize to Adam...because your remark was not only a comment on the fashion scene (which you have every right to make), but it was a personal statement against Adam, meaning to hurt. And this remark is coming from what I had always viewed as a responsible, mature organization and leading fashion magazine, but with this remark, comes off as nothing more than another cheap Hollywood rag. I truly hope you will extend your apologies to Adam, and in the future, take into account that no one anywhere is dressing with such style, elan, panache, and sheer masculine beauty, as Adam Lambert. I’m not on twitter or any social media (fear of the big time suck!), but if I were to say something to GQ it would be this: Gay is neither a style nor a lifestyle, it is a sexual orientation, a minority one, but still simply one of many possible orientations. Styles can be worn by anyone of any orientation! To link a particular style with a particular sexual orientation is crazy, but means your unintended (and possibly unaware) bias is showing! Oops GQ! Time to rethink!

Here's a quick, simple, and often effective little technique to use when feeling frustrated by or temped to join in the fan wars, drained by anxiety (such as worry about friends going through tough times like bamafan or catzmadam), or when wanting to balance emotions or increase mental clarity. I know, sounds pretty darned new-agey. It is a great little exercise to practice, though. www.heartmath.org/free-services/tools-for-well-being/quick-coherence-adult.htmlpeace&love and extra hugs to all those dealing with the aftermath of the tornadoes and to Catzmadam for her combined health and vandalism challenges- and big thanks to NoAngel and Q3 for today's essays Thank you, I will try it at work and whenever I feel like getting sucked into 'small skirmishes' and will save my energy for the big battles And Adam provides lots of memories to use in step 3 - "recall a time when you felt good inside/ re-experience the feeling!" Right now I'm thinking about Nokia LA - Adam on the floor and out of sight from where I was standing after PH, then Adam with a huge smile, still on the floor, but sitting up, appearing (from my perspective) above those standing right up against the stage, and then moving forward to all-fours as WLL began... #goodtimes
