Idol has been severely criticized for keeping their gay contestants "under raps" and in previous years, the gay banter between Ryan and Simon. But the past year has brought the most crriticism due to the openly gay contestants on The Voice that are celebrated. Having an out & proud gay judge would silence those critics.
Interesting. I thought the opposite way. If Adam does end up becoming a judge on the show, how is he going to deal with that whole topic, especially, if there happens to be a contestant who becomes the recipient of heavy speculation? I assume he will protect the contestant's right to make his own choices.
My gut feel was more that Adam will try to get attention back onto the contestants and away from the judges (and himself) and will more likely nip the whole discussion in the butt from the get go.
If Adam allows too much of this gay talk from the media, the show will become about that and indirectly again about one of the judges instead of the contestants and Adam will be totally opposed to that.
In fact, one reason why he would be such a good judge is because he would use his influence to bring it back to the contestants, because he is very aware that this is one of the areas where the show in recent years (SC/PA/RJ - years and beyond) has gone off kilter. Adam will not want that to happen, and imo this alone is going to get a few ratings points back for the show.
But for that he needs to dial the gay talk down for the months of the show and just request that the media do the same. He cannot force them to comply, but he can call them out on their shit if they create unnecessary hoopla and I think he should.
He will be visible, just by being there, he doesn't need any frenzy beyond that, it's just a distraction.

Mys*&@^#r, the other thought that I had on the matter was that.... Adam is male, and this is an advantage.
I know this sounds weird, but hear me out.
We don't know what's going on behind the scenes, but let's assume that they are looking to overhaul the entire panel. Or even that either Randy or Steven Tyler -one of them - is not coming back next year. It's quite likely, since Randy is associated with "old" idol, and let's face it, Steven Tyler is useless as a judge and has moved past his usefulness he was bringing in terms of visibility.
All the other names mentioned in the press as people who are considered are female. With one exception, will.i.am. Adam is the only other male. I think Idol is going to continue the 2 males/1 female panel, so Adam being a male popstar works in his advantage, I think.
That being said, do I think this is really going to happen? I am not getting my hopes up, let's put it that way. We know nothing at this point.

My two cents on hate comments on anything concerning Adam.... This is a quote that I have always loved. I think it originated here but I am not sure…. “How do you imagine someone who is outrageously beautiful without having an outrageously beautiful imagination?” Yes, some of the hate towards Adam is jealousy, some is homophobia, but in my opinion all hate largely stems from fear. Fear of the unknown, the unexplored. Fear of the fantastical and magical, yet sweet and intelligent being that Adam is at his core. There is too much going on for the small minded. They will never get him, and it is such a pity. I feel very sorry for people without the capacity to take it all in. I’ve used the analogy in the past of Adam as a spicy fusion dish…. so many amazing flavours contained in one package are intimidating for those whose palates are not used to such thrilling fare. Then there is the sex! I’m not talking about the ‘gay’ sex either. Just plain, old in your face SEX! It drips off of him. Sex scares a lot of people, and Adam is a walking, talking sex billboard on the side of a very boring highway. There are even the silly little things like the eye make-up, nail polish, gauges and the tattoos. Even some of Adam’s fans have expressed their fear of larger gauges or a sleeve of tattoos. It is fear, plain and simple. It is possible to break through that wall of fear. There will be those that will discover him when they have a tiny crack in that wall, then he will work his way in. That will be all it will take. Unfortunately there will always be the fearful. The closed minded. The non-believers. Fuck ‘em. We’re the lucky ones.

"Gay talk." ??? I would expect Adam to be the way he has always been and the press to be how they have always been. I wouldn't want Adam any other way. The mere fact that Adam is there, would be enough for Idol. Swarm, agree with everything you said about why lesbians are more accepted than gay men. lifetraveler, you reminded me of something else. Adam has been very supportive of the female singers the past few years. The present judging panel has not. Adam would be a good champion for the ladies and for the great vocalists. I agree, they will keep the panel 1 woman and 2 men. I think the woman will be the big diva star. Adam, Will.I.Am. and a huge female star would be fun, IMO! Will would be as funny as Steven is (at his funniest.)

"Gay talk." ??? I would expect Adam to be the way he has always been and the press to be how they have always been. I wouldn't want Adam any other way. The mere fact that Adam is there, would be enough for Idol. Well, during Idol Adam was open within AI, but towards the media reserved. Not denying anything, but clearly stating that this was about music and singing and nothing else. He let the media run the speculation news cycle on their own. Then after idol, he matter of fact confirmed what everybody speculated. Then a next round of hoopla errupted. About what? Very good question, but if you read the media of the time they found plenty to gay/gay/yay/yay about. If you say now, that he will be the same as he always was, then I agree with you. During idol he will try to dial this down as much as possible at least from his end of things and after idol season is over he probably will be more willing to engage in the topic. I don't think we are saying different things here. ???
