It is easy to remember the hits that people perform on Idol and The Voice.
But many songs performed on both shows do not become hits. Xtina performed "You Lost Me" on Idol, it did not chart. She performed "Fighter" on The Voice, it peaked at #20. Oddly, it was a big hit outside the US.

Maybe AI is going to a four judge panel. But it needs to be noted that The Voice is doubling its judge/mentor panel to eight, with the addition of Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong, Michael Buble, etc.
The reason everyone wants to be a judge on the TV talent shows is obvious: EXPOSURE, EXPOSURE, EXPOSURE.
Entertainment Weekly, a few months back (when I still subscribed) had a big feature article on how The Voice had turned Adam Levine from a singer in a fading pop group to a household name.
There are no longer any variety shows on TV, only these talent shows. That's why the focus has apparently moved from the contestants to the judges, and why so many stars are vying for judgeships.
As much as I originally hated having Adam linked again to Idol, I can see how being on the judging panel would probably benefit his career.

Yes, there are clear benefits to being an Idol judge but it is not the only path. The other TV shows are the performance dramas -- GLEE, SMASH, and so on. And there are other options.

That's why the focus has apparently moved from the contestants to the judges, and why so many stars are vying for judgeships. Interesting, heathcliff, I was just thinking about this today. Now that the stigma has been clearly removed from being a judge on an reality show/singing competition, it seems that contestants are no longer the focus. I hope that the "moat" between them doesn't remain too large, making the public view the contestants as incidental and not capable of true superstardom (with, let's face it, very few exceptions of Carrie and Kelly). eta: And I still have a subscription to EW that was renewed without me knowing. They pile up on the floor and then get tossed ;D

I honestly believe that "Moves Like Jagger" would have been #1 with or without The Voice. It was #1 in 18 countries, Top 5 in many more. The only major market it did not do really well in is Japan #30. The Voice helped it but it is not that powerful a show. This was the best selling show in the world. It is just one massive hook. Maroon 5 performed their song "Never Gonna Leave This Bed" in the Superbowl preshow and that song peaked at #55 (but is Gold). Not sure why but I always end up hating these best selling songs. I hated "Moves Like Jagger", "Payphone", "Call Me, Maybe" and "Hey, Soul Sister". I am the same way with movies. :( You're not the only one ! I feel that way too and am never sure if it's because they overplay them or what...?Call me Maybe' makes me wnat to jump out of a speeding car when it starts playing (yet again) : ;D
