Seriously, this is somewhat related to the research work I do.

There is evidence that spelling ability is almost totally genetic (separated twin studies) and some kind of innate capacity.

From one study (1995) of 159 elementary students in grades 3-5.The elementary from which the sample was taken is located in rural Ohio:

A positive correlation was found between intelligence scores, obtained on the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test, and the subject areas of reading (.49), English (.50), social studies (.44), science (.51), and math (.47). A lesser correlation was found with spelling
(.30). No significant differences were noted in correlations between intelligence of genders and any of the academic categories.

For non-stat people, a correlation of .30 is a very weak positive correlation.

These results have been replicated many times -- with a wide range of ages.

The most interesting studies are in the extremes -- extremely poor spellers with High IQs, and people who have photographic memory skills and superior spelling but Low IQs.

A very large percentage of artists, performers, architects, programmers and engineers fall into the High IQ, non-traditional learner categories. It is one of the times when what is intuitive turns out to be true. And it is one reason that we need to support arts education and design education in our schools.

Luckily, spell check makes it less important these days to be a good speller. One of my pet peeves, and I'm an English teacher, is other teachers who decide poor spelling or bad handwriting indicates less intelligence in students, and I've run into these types, believe me! Off topic, but you started it Q3, lol.

My husband is a terrible speller and graduated from Harvard with a 4.0.

As for Donors Choose, I'm in.
