My recollection from back when AI started out was that it was successful at being a family show, where grandma, parent and kids could watch together, something that at an 8 pm time slot was otherwise not commonplace. 10 years later, the family circumstances of those families that got into AI in 2002 would naturally have changed and they correspondingly might have fallen out of the viewer pool.
The next generation of families, the ones that have kids now, are dealing with a media overload in the house and TV is not winning with the young generation. Mom and grandma might still be watching, but the kid is playing its DS or something. It is not that family binding experience anymore.
Add to that boring seasons and you just don't get the same level of all-around engagement.
Idol will not be able to go back to where they were in 2002, but by offering a show that creates buzz and conversation they can still gain some folks back.
They can go more online to meet the next generation there.
They can update/modernize their song catalog.
They can develop some newer theme weeks.
Many ways how some of these viewers might be lured back and others might be won over.
But they have their work cut out for them for sure.
In general, I believe, people watch what is interesting and creates buzz. If idol is interesting again, people will be back for it.

Reyna @rainonme83 Heading to sound check! aha! I was right! sound check - explains "free" public calendar for today... Q3 - so now if one gets into trouble (drugs, etc) and goes into rehab that costs mega $s and manages to stay healthy for a bit - that person is a good role model for teens?

Seems like more evidence that this is not settled.

Seems like more evidence that this is not settled. Or he knows and just can't say anything yet It's all a mystery.

If I were you, I'd call and text requests for NCOE and when Trespssing comes out, that one too!
I'm sooo ready to request the new single (Tsp or Cuckoo?), and so are the rest of local Atopians, I'm sure.
However, I'm not sure about requesting NCOE at this stage of game, I mean, it's a song that was never really embraced by the radio & masses, and now is at the end of its life cycle. I think, I'm gonna request WWFM for now. I don't get it when people shy away from his older music, old or new, it's his songs on the radio and one day, WWFM will become a classic of Adam Lambert!

Q3 - so now if one gets into trouble (drugs, etc) and goes into rehab that costs mega $s and manages to stay healthy for a bit - that person is a good role model for teens? : I guess it depends on the teen. In Demi's case, I think that the substance abuse, mental health and other issues are not to be celebrated but can provide a teachable moment. And her courage to get help and reorient her life is a model about accountability. She took responsibility. I have not lived a perfect life and people gave me a chance -- or 6 chances by last count. I still am not perfect but I am more humble and have learned to take responsibility for my own mistake and learn from them. And I am constantly learning.
