I've never really understood why the new day starts at 12:00. It makes more sense to me to have 12:59 p.m. be the last minute of the old day and 1:00 a.m. be the first minute of the new day. We start counting at 1, not at 12. I don't expect it to ever change, but I just think my way is more logical! It's not about when the new day starts. 12 noon is when the sun is directly overhead. You can see from the Latin terms that the division is about the Middle of the day not the end. AM is before middle, PM is after middle. It would make even less sense if 12:00 was AM and 12:01 was PM.

But why can't they call the time when the sun is directly overhead "1:00"?

The trick to remembering it is that the change from am to pm or pm to am happens exactly ON 12:00. So think of a digital clock clicking over: For Midnight 11:58 PM 11:59 PM 12:00 AM 12:01 AM For Noon 11:58 AM 11:59 AM 12:00 PM 12:01 PM It's easy to know which is AM or PM when you think of 11:00 so whichever that is the 12:00 following is the opposite. It is relatively easy to present the times in another way. Also the meaning of am and pm (and often their origin in latin) is taught very early when you learn the language. It is the ambiguous points that cause trouble. The quote above is actually helpful, thank you. I will try to keep that in mind. Needs some thinking though as I only have a 12-hour clock in my car, all digital ones at home work in a 24-hour method... microwave, phone, tv, PVR and they change from 11.59 to 00.00 at midnight. All my clocks have 'hands'

They require some plug-in >:(
Another thing to whine about: IT world that cannot decide any standards and you have to download this and that... Well, I'll wait for soundcloud TYVM.
^^The more so as we have 2.05 already and some sleep might be a good idea. Also I have some problems with posting, it gets stuck...
