crazy, I do not think it is silly to care about your fish. They are innocent creatures with no way to save themselves if the worst happens.
That said -- I think the warning from the NJ Weather Service said it best:
"If you are reluctant, think about your loved ones," the statement said. "Think about the emergency responders who will be unable to reach you when you make the panicked phone call to be rescued. Think about the rescue/recovery teams who will rescue you if you are injured or recover your remains if you do not survive."
Do what you have to do!

Stay safe my fellow northeast-coasters. Can't believe the monster has intensified to 85 mph. Long Islander here. Having lived in S. Florida for 25 years, we're prepared. Never thought we'd have to use our hurricane preparedness plan in NY. I've been thinking how we put up hurricane shutters at the threat of a category 1 in south FL, but in the northeast, no one really prepared for this type of thing. Ugh! Hate that everyone has to go through this.

AND I have a coy pond. will my fishes float out. SIlly to worry about that but they are hand fed and are my pets. I guess it's silly but still I worry Not about my basement flooding because I live in a very heavily stream area thus the name of my street "BASIN" but I don't worry about the basement but stupid fish. oh well People with any kind of pet will understand how you feel. I have no answer to your problem, but hope both you and they stay safe. My granddaughter is at Penn State and she said all the schools around them are closed, but never returned my text on whether SHE has classes. Hope y'all don't lose electricity, that's a major pain.

Many thanks to all of you for your good wishes! I am in eastern Hampton, VA, about a mile or so from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay (between Grandview and Buckroe Beach on the map). We've had a lot of wind and rain so far but are doing ok; I would say comparable to Irene last year but much longer duration. Nothing like Isabel in 2003. The "usual suspect" intersections have been flooded (and were flooded yesterday morning before the rest of this rain came in.) I do have some standing water in the back of my backyard, but nothing threatening the house. My house is on a concrete slab as opposed to a crawl space, so significant coastal flooding would be more of a problem for me than for my neighbors. Fortunately it looks as though we will be ok with the high tides today. I did a lot of work with my trees earlier this year so that has really helped when the winds are so high.
I know that our friends northeast of us are expected to have it much worse; my thoughts and prayers are with all of you and your families and friends in that area. Please take care and stay safe!

Sending prayers to everyone affected by this storm and hoping for the best outcome. Let us know how you're doing when you can - you know how we worry about everyone from the atop family.
Speaking of families, my sister was on the phone with her 25 year old son on Friday. He's been working relatively close to where the 7.6 earthquake took place in British Columbia (Canada). She was chatting away when all of a sudden he said "Earthquake! Gotta go, Mom!" Called her back later to say he was ok, like a good son.

Oh, you are quite close to my childhood friend. She lives in Virginia Beach with her husband and 4 kids. I'm so worried about them, writing a letter right now.

Q3 Thank you again for starting this thread. It has really helped me deal with my anxiety. I'm emailing back and forth with my family as well. But, so nice to connect here.
All you who have been sending the good vibes I cannot tell you how nice it is to receive such caring sweet messages. It really does make it all easier.
Wow, the wind just picked up big time. Radio is saying 50 miles/per hour now here. Massive 60 mph gusts bending the pines over. Mon Dieu I am sooooo happy I am in this brick building. It's like a little motley party here.
5 Days ago I was worried about my sister who lives in South Africa because of her cat 1 hurricane. She and her children were fine but it has been storming madly there too. C.R.A.Z.Y.
Wind just opened the heavy front doors of the motel.
Thinking I need tequila.
