Is the Universe working for Adam or is VH1 Divas just well timed PR?
11.27.12 by Q3
Today, like most days for the past 3+ years, I start with a review of all the Adam news stories. For a few weeks I have been confronted with one big Adam PR effort in the US -- Adam will host VH1 Divas. The promos emphasize his vocal skill in a humorous and memorable way. And the story and promos are just about everywhere. For example, here is an article from yesterday: www.hollywoodreporter.com/idol-worship/adam-lambert-shatters-glass-shows-394190
At the same time, it is Grammy voting season. It is time to remind thousands of votes that Adam is alive and well and singing away!!
Is the timing just a coincidence or is the Universe at work or does Adam have the best PR team in the world?
Things have a way of working out for Adam. So maybe it doesn't matter why VH1 Divas press and promo aligned with Grammy voting. It is just a very nice thing that they did align.
The strange and hard to predict Grammy Nominating Process
11.27.12 by Q3
Of all the major award competitions, the hardest nominations to predict are the Grammys. The reason is because of the unusual voting process and organization.
1. First of all, there are lot of voters -- far more than the other academies. Recording Academy members include: singers, songwriters, engineers, producers, managers and a wide range of professionals working in the music industry. Record companies do not vote although some of there employees are voting members.
There are several ways to qualify as a Voting Member of the Recording Academy -- including being endorsed by two current Members.
Voting Member
This classification is for creative and technical professionals who qualify in at least one of the categories of eligibility. All recordings must be commercially released in the U.S. either through traditional distribution channels or recognized online retail settings. Below are four different methods of applying for Voting membership.
Recordings Released On Line Only:
- Recordings commercially released in the U.S. through recognized online music retailers.
- Must have 12 qualifying physical or digital tracks or equivalent duration of content.*
- One qualifying track must have been released within five years of receipt of application.
- Releases must be currently available for purchase through recognized online music retailers.
- Recordings must be accompanied by verifiable documentation, e.g. liner notes, allmusic.com.
Recordings Released Through Physical Distribution:
- Recordings commercially released in the U.S. through physical distribution outlets.
- Must have six physical tracks or equivalent duration of content.*
- One qualifying track must have been released within five years of receipt of application.
- Qualifying tracks must be currently available for sale through physical music retailers.
- Recordings must be accompanied by verifiable documentation, e.g. liner notes, allmusic.com.
GRAMMY Nomination:
- If you were nominated for a GRAMMY® Award within the previous five years.
Endorsement By Recording Academy Voting Members
- Applicants who do not fully qualify in any of the above categories may request the necessary endorsement forms from Member Services. (Please call 310.392.3777 or email memservices@grammy.com.).
- Applicants must be endorsed by two current, Voting Members of The Recording Academy.
- Application will be reviewed by Member Services and may be sent to a local Chapter committee for additional review.

2. Many of the voters are independent [not associated with a major label] artists, producers and music executives. The Independent Music Association and similar groups have worked to promote membership within the Indie music sector/ For example: a2im.org/2011/08/09/grammy-1st-round-ballots-coming-soon-join-recording-academy-by-september-15-to-vote/
3. There are a lot of categories. The total number of categories to be recognized at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 10, 2013, there are 29 fields (Pop, Gospel, Classical, etc.) and 81 categories within those fields.. (An increase of 3 since last year.) There are thousands of submissions. For some reason the Grammys keeps the submissions secret and this year the ballot has not leaked. Some categories have over 700 submissions.
4. The voting process is convoluted. Voters can pick their own categories of expertise and vote in the categories they want.
Submission and Voting Process
Submission
Recording Academy members and record companies enter recordings and music videos released during the eligibility year which they consider worthy of recognition in the GRAMMY Awards process.
Screening
Reviewing sessions by more than 150 experts in various fields are held to ensure that entered recordings meet specific qualifications and have been placed in appropriate fields such as Rock, R&B, Jazz, Country, Gospel, New Age, Rap, Classical and Latin, among others. The purpose of screenings is not to make artistic or technical judgments about the recordings, but rather to make sure that each entry is eligible and placed in its proper category.
Nominating
First-round ballots are sent to voting members in good dues standing. To help ensure the quality of the voting, members are directed to vote only in their areas of expertise; they may vote in up to 20 categories in the genre fields plus the four categories of the General Field (Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist.) Ballots are tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Deloitte.
Special Nominating Committees
In craft and other specialized categories, final nominations are determined by national nomination review committees comprised of voting members from all of The Academy's Chapter cities.
Final Voting
Final-round ballots are sent to voting members in good dues standing. The finalists determined by the special nominating committees are also included in this ballot. In this final round, Recording Academy members may vote in up to 20 categories in the genre fields plus the four categories of the General Field (Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist.) Ballots again are tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Deloitte.
Results
Results of members' voting are not known until the GRAMMY Awards presentation ceremony when names of the winners are delivered by Deloitte in sealed envelopes. GRAMMY Award winners are revealed during the GRAMMY Awards telecast.

Big numbers, strange process, and voters who can pick the categories they vote in
Think about it. First Grammy voters can vote for the four categories of the General Field (Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist.). Then they get to vote for 20 of the other 77 categories. A relatively low percentage of the vote could make an submission one of the top 5.
To illustrate, hypothetically ....if 5,000 voters choose to vote for Pop Vocal Album, and there are 350 submissions, the top 5 could get 43% of the vote distributed something like this:
14% Album 1
11% Album 2
8% Album 3
6% Album 4
4% Album 5
That only leaves 57% of the vote for the other 345 albums.
Right now, the first round ballots are being tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Deloitte. I do not believe anyone can forecast what will be nominated but we will know soon enough.
The 2013 Grammy Awards nominations telecast will be unveiled in a prime-time special to be held for the first time Nashville. The concert/press conference will be staged in Nashville's Bridgestone Arena and air live on CBS on Dec. 5 at 10 p.m. EST.
