Look how successful Carrie became. I remember her being a bit shy on that stage. She certainly learned a thing or two since Idol. I think Carrie is still a shy person, but she has worked hard, and succeeded, IMO, in overcoming that shyness for her appearances and performances. That shy personality still shows through at times and I guess that's why I find her so likeable. I admire her. I have read that Beyonce is shy as well and she has said that she still has to work on overcoming that shyness for her onstage performances. Who woulda thunk it - right? 8-) beyonce shy? never woulda thought. uh, she wears dresses slit up to the cooch.

Thanks, pastababy!! I felt Pia was only starting to come out of her shell. I mean, it was the top 9, for Pete's sakes. How many past idols have come from behind, peaking later in the show? Who among the remaining Idol contestants has both killer vocals, consistency AND stage presence a this point???? (Comin up blank here). My point is that all these kids are still growing. A couple I feel have peaked. Whether you liked Pia or not, I would have like to have seen her stay on the show longer and watch if she did develop more. Ballads or no, she was one contestant I knew would have a vocal. I just gave Carrie Underwood as an example in my response to a post. That example would fit here too. During Idol Carrie could sing, but to me she was just another cute blond. Look how she blossomed!

I find it interesting that Adam's comments about AI this year have focused on vocals and praise of those with more talent in that area. I don't remember what if anything he tweeted about Season 9, but when he mentored, he praised everyone's singing, but called out those who failed to focus on performance and emotion and energy onstage. What is interesting is this new focus in light of what he has said about his own creative process for album #2-- more about the voice. Sounds like he's staying true to his theme. Interesting. The thing is, Adam can sit on a stool singing his beautiful vocal and the audience can feel the emotion he uses to sing the song and feel the energy of the connection he makes with them. Emotional connection is just as important to a good ballad as is the vocal. Example- Bob Dylan. Adam has the gift of having a perfect vocal and the emotion to convey it powerfully. And it is not just about moving around on the stage. When Adam sings live, whatever he sings, and however he sings it, on a stool, with choreography or just standing at the mike, reaches into my very center and makes me feel. Pia did not do that. Adam did and does and will continue to do so. That is what makes him genius. Both things. His vocal and the connection he makes with the audience, sometimes made with fun/sexy movement and sometimes made with still emotional sweetness/power. Both are different sides of his exceptional charisma and maybe his willingness to put it all out there and be vulnerable.

lynne I LOVE THIS POST!!!!!!Your words are so amazing always!!! ITA!! It is sooooo amazing how much someone has to have going for them to make it these days and STILL a ton of luck, timing, faith and courage from those above and around you have to be thrown in. I'm so glad he's had time to prepare himself and he knows who he is as an artist. I was just reading Jacob's TWOP recap and Chunkey's (LMAO) and thinking about the Jimmy Iovine and will.i.am "coaching" and how instead of mentoring these kids, it was more like they were undercutting their confidence and second-guessing them. Then they get no concrete judging; they're really playing with these kids' heads. I think Adam would have had enough awareness of his own abilities to withstand that debacle, but I'm so glad he was nurtured in the preparatory stages (he had M. Orland, Rickey Minor and Byrd all believing in him and empowering him – then all the mentors loved him too ... erm, 'cept Randy Travis). Afterwards, he was judged fairly (and we know how Simon does not blow sunshine up your ass unless he truly believes the performance was good). The stars really did align that year and Paula and Simon and amazingly Randy and Kara all helped play a role in introducing Adam to the world. So glad he made the leap when he did. Cannot imagine how things might have played out otherwise. Great post, SusieFierce!!
