Anyway, I just got done playing on weibo and thought I should share some of my findings with y'all since there were some "concerns" after the Hennessy performance.
The fans, of course, absolutely lapped up everything that Adam had dished out and the non-fans (from what I've searched and read) were in awe once again of his impeccable vocals and incredible showmanship. They loved the dancers and the dancing, especially in Fever, thought each dancer's portrait of "masculinity" and "femininity" made the song Fever come alive and it was a favor among many.
IMHO, regardless fan boards members' (from every corner of the world) likes and dislikes, hang-ups, pet-peeves and whatnot, this event took place in Shanghai and what really mattered were the opinions of the attending audience and hundreds of thousands of Chinese watched the live stream, along with the rest of us. As Adam said in that vid Wal just posted that he was very lucky to have an int'l career, one of the implications is to further cultivate the local market by playing up or down accordingly when he is in that certain market. If you want to do business globally then the rules of engagement must apply.
When he's in St. Petersburg, you can bet on that he will have to tone it down, 'cuz " St. Petersburg became the fourth Russian city to pass a law banning 'homosexual propaganda', a vague measure that effectively bans gay pride parades. The law criminalizes 'public action aimed at propagandizing sodomy, lesbianism, bisexualism, and transgenderism among minors'. " But, since he was in Shanghai, a very liberal cosmopolitan city and Chinese culture and history towards homosexuality and its government's stance on the issue are vastly different from Russia, he was able to put on a show as it was. But, that's not to say there's anything wrong with a "toned-down" show, you just get a different version of Adam that's all. Adam is Adam no matter how you project and perceive, at the end of the day, what truly matters is Adam! Maddie, what a phenomenal post!!!! Do you think Adam talked about/consulted the Hennessy HBICs before the performance and do you think he'll do it before the St Petersburg concert (consult whomever the HBIC is there) and go from there when deciding which 'rules of engagement' to apply? I know for a fact that all foreign acts' performances have to be pre-approved by the Chinese authority with submissions of detailed info such as cast members, materials, props and choreograph, etc. And, like any businessman who wants to develop and establish new markets, you will need to do your homework before going into the unknown or unfamiliar territories. Adam and his team are doing it brilliantly! |
