I can't believe I am defending Gokey, but... I think his comment was a heartfelt response to the tragedy. He probably truly believes that mention of God in schools and school prayer would bring children closer to the Deity that he holds to be all important to this world. And perhaps provide some measure of protection? Whether I hold the same beliefs, I respect that he is processing this tragedy as best he can, as we all are. First, of all, if that is what he is suggesting, it is unconstitutional. We are supposed to have a separation of church and state in this country. Second, a lot of people were murdered today, and suggesting that prayer in schools will prevent that from happening again is ridiculous. It simply masks the larger problem of violence (including easy access to guns) that has gone on for years in this country. For my part, I would like some rational discourse on how to prevent violence, instead of people suggesting that prayer will somehow solve our problems. It never has. We are one of the most religious of the industrialized nations and also one of the most violent. Sorry, I'm not annoyed by your post, but by the attitude of the Gokeys of the world. I agree that his view doesn't make sense, but he wasn't being hateful. I know people (a couple in my own family) who believe that prayer will solve everything. I personally don't believe this, but that is what they believe.

Unfortunately religion is regularly kidnapped and controlled by ego. In faact one could state the case that religion is the manifestation of the ego's take on God.
I prefer to believe in God beyond "God" par Tillich
Because I just know you all definitely wanted to know that.

Gokey wasn't being hateful, just, IMO, ignorant. I think Michael Sarver is a good guy! I agree with both of you. Me too.

I think this is the real problem of the US regarding shootings: Not lack of religion, or prayers, or whatever. "Criminals have guns, so I have to have a gun to defend myself." I hope I don't offend anyone (this is just my opinion), but that's completely bullshit. Most criminals wouldn't have guns if they couldn't buy them so easily. Honestly, I have little patience regarding the US policy on guns. Yeah, that must be why gun sales skyrocketed in Colorado after the mindless shootings there. People do have that mentality of wanting to protect themselves against madness. My problem is one of enforcement. If we simply put another law on the books banning this or that, everyone will feel like they have done something for our future protection. It takes more then just a law.

A little bit OTT: I was invited to a concert a couple of weeks ago and I was going to say no because is quite far away, in Lisbon, and because I didn't know any of the artists as all of them are portuguese. But as one is Aurea, the girl who sang with Adam in Shangai. I liked the stuff from her I saw in youtube, so tomorrow I will go to the concert. It is not the Diva concert but... ETA: we have here people from all over the word and I am sure that more than one socialist. ETA 2: the post I was refering was modified. I think is a tabu word in the USA, here nobody is going to be offended.

I don't think Neil ever forgave Gokey (and I wouldn't assume he forgave Sarver even after Sarver's enlightenment) for the stuff during Idol. Even after Adam pragmatically put it behind him. ('twas a glorious day for me when the internet rose up against Gokey, even I was caught up ). Also it seems - like many - Neil processes strong emotion with anger and - though I don't care - it's legit to suggest raising prayer in school in response to this tragedy is in poor taste. ( I just assume Gokey's stupid and not worth the rage. Now huckabee otoh...)
