Well, I think words are just collections of letters. Like Adam said once, the intention behind the word is the culprit. Of cuz, I know. I know trust me babe I'm being protective of him in a sense that I just don't want anything bad happen to him I understand, bb. But there's no need to be so over-protective. He's a big boy, he can handle it. And he does it amazingly well. ;D

I like this kind of debates, by the way. Very interesting.

Skylar's friend was using the African American analogy re taking back the sting of a word and their referring to each other as "n###er....note, as a caucasion person, I KNOW that I do not have the right to use that word without risking offending someone. The gay community as done the same thing with their hate words of F#G, F##ot etc, as well as appropriating the term Queer. That is their right. Hey anyone using faggot is cool with me as long as it's a nice context. Like a friend has called me a "beautiful faggot" before, that's a compliment. Now let's take the harmless word "fairy". But if a homophobe called me a fairy maliciously I'd be offended. I don't get offended whenever I see the word fairy though. CONTEXT!

Thanks Skylar and Alison...no offense taken albiku. We all draw our preferred lines in our own sand and those lines and the sand differs for each of us.
I am actually more offended by the continual calling our and putting down of other fans because they do not think the same as another....their sand lines differ...as if fan stanning were a zero sum game.
All is well. We all love the same wonderful man and we have so much to celebrate at the moment...
OTT sidebar: I think I must have completely lost my mind. I have spent the last 3 hours going through every box I could think of looking for the fur collar that attaches to my winter coat. I am going where it is cold for xmas so need to haul it out of mothballs...could not find...So in frustration I go to hang the coat up and out of the sleeve falls the fur collar!!!!! Good bloody grief...
so I guess that means you can take my words with that proverbial grain of salt...yikes

Like I said before, in my circle of friends we use certain words that would offend many people. For us, those are merely terms of endearment, because that's the way we mean them. Now, if someone called me one of those words in a malicious way, that would be a completely different thing.

I dunno No one cares if you being silly and stupid in private. BUT, he DID use an extremely inappropriate word in public this time.. many ladies who saw the word would get very upset.. even though he absolutely did not mean that... Well Adam... He took the tweet down, probably realizing his mistake..Adam has explained that words are just words that it's the intent behind them that gives them meaning.. He had a George Carlin moment. OK, why is it a disparaging word? Fuck used to be too but now everyone says it. Why is cunt bad but Va Jay Jay is not! Sorry, but a word is just a word and the intent behind words is what makes them bad. We all know how Adam and some of his friends use it. Do you think he was dissing Sutan when he use it or saying he thought the vid was awesome? If Adam using one word makes someone not a fan, especially when he has actually explained his use in the past....... IDGI!! :dunno:

Pretty much. I don't find words offensive in of themselves. They're merely symbols and sounds, devoid of any substance. It's the intention placed into them which offends me, or not.

I still see the tweet there.
English is my 2nd language too, so I didn't feel that bad. And please correct me if I am wrong: in the context, it sounds to me that he used the word to describe himself. If that is the case, why would others offend. it's just like he calling himself f*g. Agree that it may be better if he hadn't used the word, but Adam's been known for having no filter.

True...and the context is that they are a friend...not tweeting out to the universe full of people they have mostly never met, of massively diverse cultures... eta...I would never censor what you or Adam or anyone else says to other in their circle. This was twittered out publicly....to well over a million people around the world, many if not most, women. That is the context of that tweet....Yes intention is important...but words still carry a world of meaning all by themselves and it is disingenuous to claim they do not...that just moves the whole thing into a "blame the victim' stance....and allows for the classic passive aggressive stance: "you misunderstood me"...or "just kidding" or "lighten up" or "sheesh, can't you take a joke"....yada yada yada
