ETA: To put this stray thought into context -- Idol fans were mentioned above and I was thinking about how little commitment it take to be an Idol fan. Forcing fans to take OWNERSHIP of music would make the more loyal.
If they let me redo Idol..... I would have the contestants perform, and put the song for sale immediately after the show ends. A purchase would equal a vote. I would use IP address to select only the votes that came from the right place and time -- 2 hours after the show per time zone. I would limit "voting" to 10 per IP address. No more spam voting. And no more negative voting for free. I believe the winner in my system would be very likely to have a better commercial potential than the current Idol crew. Well over a hundred Idol finalists and fewer than 10 are currently really successful. And only Adam, Scotty and P2 have reasonable to great sales from the past 5 years. Q3 - something similar to the first part of your voting system was used here in Oz for the Voice (not sure if done same way in US). You could vote by text message and I think that was limited or you could buy the single of the song they performed on iTunes as soon as the show finished and each purchase equaled 2 votes. The itunes top 10 after the show was a sea of red covers with The voice on them. It was a good indicator of who was going to go through actually - how long their singles stayed in the top 10. The 4 that ended up as finalists were consistently the top single sellers from the start. I think fans should create the show. I am really not kidding. A crowdsourced TV show. I'll have to think about that a bit. But it would at least be interesting.

This conversation reminds me of a really well written blog back during AI - the guy talked about skipping a big football game in order to watch Adam on Idol. Don't know where to look for it, but maybe someone here does. He had some unsettling feelings, too, if I recall. And there was another one, about the same time, by a minister who pretty frankly said Adam stirred some unexpected feelings... Some of Adam's decisions may have set him back a bit in his career and he may realize it. But the fact that he has been so open has been/is a contibuting factor to the desensitization of many, I think. And he may feel it is well worth it in the larger scheme of things. He is brave. (and hot!) [/IMG] [/IMG]
Ring of Fire was an uncomfortable moment for many, myself included...these were my eyes and I felt a bit of a chill. I've always thought that performance showed Adam's pure sensuality ! (Fire down below indeed !!!) But when Simon critiqued with the "indulgent rubbish" and Randy Travis' wife was so sour I got po'd. I thought Simon was rather taken aback. Even Ellen said she shouted at the tv when Simon said that. ALF is completely unique. [/IMG] Interesting that Adam has remarked he thought it was one of his better singing efforts on the show.

Adam's range and control on that song was amazing (typically so, but still--!).

So amazing when I go back and read the comments re his performances and the full out acknowledgment of AL's homosexuality ...the "I could care less attitude" so early on makes it even more astonishing he hasn't skyrocketed into fame and fortune.

I mean, he's a singer and I thought he would be able to appreciate it. I'm not even sure he said why he hated it so much. It was certainly not pitchy or screamy, and it was very much in control.

. I'm not even sure he said why he hated it so much. . Could it be those "uncomfortable feelings" took over his sensibilities? ;D

I doubt anybody else can do it like Adam did it with the song.. yeah, to me he uses his vocal techniques and the control to produce the effect of FLAMES of the fire... I am so blown away by this performance

Adam's production skills were a major plus on Idol and I didn't know until the show was over and the interview questions that he implemented them himself.
I remember watching BTBW again and again and stopping the video to see if the string section was REALLY waving their bows !!!What!
And the wild, wild drum playing...his back up singers (shades of the VJJ's)
And how did you feel with Slow Ride when he came out in the TIGHT ...did I say TIGHT striped pants. O.M.G.!!!!!
Rickey Minor was such a cool dude on that number.
Fanning myself just thinking about it. Must revisit.....
