I really like Adele. Her voice, her songs, her corky British humour ( based on
one interview that I saw - so I can't really call myself a fan) all appeal to me. Most importantly, I value her for becoming so successful without using her womanly attributes in a fashion that all female singers do nowadays. Also, Adele doesn't dance, she just stands (sits/walks) and sings. Who would have thought, that you can sell millions without shaking your tushy (not that I have anything against shaking tushies, provided it's talented)... It pleases me as a woman and restores my faith in humanity (it really does).
That would also be one similarity between Adam and her that I see; both of them defy the odds, don't fit the mold, and since I'm a die hard Adam fan, it makes me appreciate her a little more.
Why am I not a die hard Adele fan? With her, you know what you get. The sound, the vibe, the colour of her voice are predictable. You can say: "I'm in the mood for Adele" and just play her, no surprises. If you get bored, or sleepy, at one point you can doze off without risking being woken up, I guarantee. Whereas Adam is everything but predictable. He surprises and grabs attention, demands focus and doesn't allow dosing off. The variations of all sorts stretch throughout his albums as wholes and within individual songs as well. He easily sails through genres and singing styles and that inclusive energy and all-encompassiveness are his biggest assets. Arguably, they are his biggest flaw - whoever said here that Adam is too good for his own good was probably right.
Yesterday I listened to Skyfall once, twice... I really liked it. In the middle of the third time, all it did is bring me back to Adam and his songs. I felt the urge to revisit Loaded Smile, Can't Let You Go, Broken Open... So I made a playlist, combining them with similar songs from "Trespassing", like Broken English, Chokehold, Take Back, Nirvana... Oh boy! He took me to a higher plane, I have to say. I was newly and freshly amazed, shocked, stunned and all the other things related to a bona fide cathartic experience. Those are Songs, with capital S. I honestly believe that Can't Let You Go is a masterpiece, for example. Skyfall pales in comparison to it.
Who would have thought, that after all these years, it is not only his voice, his performance skills nor his sex appeal that got me glued to my seat - in my case, that glue is his music and his songs.
I will never ever flinch in the face of FOOs waving with sales, numbers, legacies and what not as evidence of anyone's superior quality. Even disregarding Adam's natural charisma and killing performance style, his Songs are outstanding in such a way that doesn't allow doubt or second guessing. I wish that no fan of his, or even Adam himself, let that doubt sneak upon them. I wish that Adam never takes scissors and chops off all those rivulets, contours and ornaments of his that so lavishly fall outside the expected circle in order to fit; because his shape is that of a multi-pointed star and I see those points, embrace them and love him for them. The predictability of a circle is for squares. I want my sun to have rays.
ETA/ How redundant would it be now, on scale from 1 to 5, to say that I can't wait for Album #3? Squee!!!!
