Because radio pd's and DJ are stupid dickheads. They think the only fans that Adam has are old matronly cougars. They think he has no young fans, which is their demographics. Therefore they will not play his songs, or they will just do it in spits and spurts and obligatory few spins to satisfy the cougars. They hate Glamberts and our voting skills. Again they think it's just a few Glamberts repeat voting, and not their demographics. So crap like Bieber, Carly Rae Jepson, etc get played because it supposedly reaches their demogrphics. WWFM was a differnt animal, he was coming off AI. I think Adam will always suffer from this, and we need to get used to it. Peeps like Katy Perry appeal to kids, tweens, teens and moms despite her age. Adam is the devil, may be too gay, too sexy too threatening for kids and tweens and teens. However, Pretty Little Liars proved us wrong in that area. He needs more radio and tv exposure to hit these demographics. Besides the wierd single launches and Trespassing launch and lack of promotion and the AI stigma and Cougar DJ prejudice (wow what a laundry list)... I am just going to say it... He's Gay, and since 47% of the US, last poll I saw, is still anti-gay - and a large percent of that is venomously anti with some ruling the airwaves and/or having money to lobby their hate agenda - I don't see that changing until A) He becomes beyond gay, like an Elton B) continues to have success internationally which trickles into the US radio/etc not being able to ignore him C) his next album is SO fantastic is cuts right through the Bull or D) more time and changing mindsets. But the elephant in the room is his sexual orientation, and I suspect he is more than aware of that, even if it is not talked about in that light... There, I said it. It gets danced around - but deep down, I am sure a lot of us may think this too... That is why I believe it is so important for him to be himself and live his life - and I too believe his day will come. Look at the love and greeting he received this year for his B-day... many love him as much as we do. And I sometimes wonder if the legends that have worked with him or given him a shout-out feel this too, and want to help move things forward. Do they just do this strictly for his talent, or to also help him rise above the bull and prejudice - would love to know if any of the rebel spirit enters into the Adam connection for them and wanting to help a brother, so to speak, get a leg up - which IMHO he so deserves? Yup being gay and sexual .. Other gay artists are not sexually appealing like Adam..for some , real scary stuff. I believe he tried to tone it down, possibly the pressure talked about by Sam, with Trespassing. When his album went to #1 on BB200 as the FIRST GAY artist, he was labeled again, potential buyers may have felt the album was too gay. Adam being Adam will be himself, thank god, and will let the chips fall where they may. However ,I still think even with that attitude, what else can he do. Adam desires acceptance and popularity by the 'popular kids i.e. the Brunos, the Rhiannas, etc.and certainly by the music industry and radio.

LOL, so now people can't judge quality of a work because their preference isn't the genre? Right. So glad I'm not married to any one genre. Man, makes a critic's job VERY difficult. I'd say four stars from RS and a high 80s from Billboard are higher than a B because the incidences of five stars are very rare, you can't put it on a traditional scale. You need to go by percentile. Also, the review 5/10 stars that most impacted his metacritic score was from a random blog and full of the reviewer's preconceived notions about what Adam SHOULD be doing (rock) and the work wasn't judged on its own merits at all. In further discussion with the critic, he continually defended his bad review by comparing Adam to Elton, Freddie, Madonna and MJ and saying "Trespassing" wasn't "Thriller," so therefore it didn't rate. OIC, it isn't the same as one of the biggest albums in history, so not worthy of a decent score? And Adam wasn't ever being compared to his contemporaries but legends (as usual). His defense was rife with prejudice and ludicrous examples. One I particularly loved was when he said, "Tower of Babel falling down again" was a superficial lyric, but then trying to make a different point elsewhere Adam should have done something like "Wanna Be Startin' Something." Ookay, got it. Tower of Babel as a reference to language is lame but "You're a vegetable ... " is what he should aspire too? Mmmkay. No need to be snippy Susie B-| You seem to take all this very personally, which I don't understand to be honest. I personally don't think you can judge the quality of something if you're not particularly a fan of it because you come in with a built in bias. I can't judge Opera because I hate opera and think it's all just noise. I can't judge rap for the same reason...noise. Also, are you really comparing a fan's opinion to that of a professional critic, whose job it is to listen objectively? Do all critics listen objectively? of course not but if we're going to base quality on critic's opinions, well Frank Ocean's album has a metacritic score of 92 out of 100 so clearly the critics think it's a pretty fantastic album. You seem to have picked one particularly memorable review (for you) and decided to use that as an example of the bias used against Adam however, the same thing happens to all artists, not just Adam. He's not "picked on" more than the others, we as fans, just notice more when it happens to him because he matters more to us than other artists do. As for the lyric content, I never understood what "Tower of Babel falling down again" meant.....that reference was completely lost on me so I guess I can see where someone else might think the lyric is superficial if they didn't get what he was referring to. I try to look on the positive side of things in order to avoid unnecessary angst so perhaps the critic you're referring to thinks Adam is capable of making a "Thriller" quality album and thinks he's worthy of comparison to the greats, which should be seen as a compliment not a diss IMO. Well if you are going by metacritic scores, two of the other album nominees, Fun and Mumford and Sons got 60 and 63 on metacritic, respectively. Both lower than Adam's score. They also got a 3 1/2 stars from the stingy Rolling Stone, also lower than Adam's rating. I still think he deserved a nomination based on quality.

I think being a male hurt Adam with getting a pop solo nom. Not a single male was nominated now that they combined the male and female categories.

Melliemom I always feel how much you care about Adam. Yes, Adam has disappointments, but he also has big successes and big possibilities. If you have big possibilities, you have potential to face big disappointments. That is the life of a working artist. It is what he has chosen. In the end, you enjoy the successes tremendously and move on from the disappointments. Neither really define you. You remind yourself of the intrinsic joy in the process of creating art and eat at your home lunch table with people who celebrate high points with you, and are there to remind you of who you are when things get shady- and who don't value you any more or less at either end. From what I can surmise, Adam has these kind of people. I don't know him, but my sense after following him for quite some time now, is that he has resiliency as well. I could be projecting, but he feels pretty well grounded and well supported to me at his core- underneath his underneath. On to new opportunities to perform and to new music!!!!! ETA: Sorry, we talk about this a lot around our dinner table. I love you Lynne and always get so much out of your musings.. Yes you are right, I plainly adore Adam and as a past teacher of special ed. children,I may be too sensitive to signs of prejudice and the pain it causes.Because of my feelings for Adam I have become very active in some LGBT issues. Maybe my own interests color my view of Adam's career. He certainly is an amazing, resilient ,talented and evolved man, not a victim in any sense.. yet I'm sure he has feelings and I'm sure he hurts from time to time as we all do. Whatever else.. The music business is one tough industry and now that it's in financial trouble.. I can't imagine how competitive it is for artists at this time. Hoping Adam does get the opportunity to branch out into TV and movies. I think TV is where he rules..Hugs to you always

I was shopping at Lowe's this afternoon and what do I hear - the opening strains of WWFM. I love that song - it sounds so great on the radio. I just stood there transfixed until it ended. Made my day.

I agree music is subjective and having a high quality song, which I believe Trespassing has many, doesn't, IMO, make the songs/album transformative. Transformative means it changes the direction of the artists' career, raises it up to a higher status than before. Adam isn't at a higher status than he was with FYE, if anything he's not as high up as before because IMO, BTIKM and NCOE were both higher quality singles than IIHY and WWFM yet neither received radio play. I think the one truly transformative song on Trespassing is Outlaws of Love and that is because it speaks to a generations/communities struggle with equality. It is moving, honest and thought provoking. Personally I'd rather look at Adam's career like an outsider would, rather than a fan. As a fan I want to believe he's the most amazing, splendiforuous thing to ever happen to music....however, if I look at his career from an outsider's perspective, he's done respectably well, he's moderately successful and he clearly has a lot of potential to grow and gain both in popularity and success but he's got a long way to go. As a fan I hope he gets there....but I won't cry about it if he doesn't. Stanning Adam (or any artist) should be about having fun and I can't worry or stress about the things I can't control. Really good grounded perspective that I totally agree with. Re Adam and Grammy nominations. Of course His fans think he was overlooked and deserved a nom - we are his fans. Doesn't mean he was. There are plenty of unsung (pardon the pun) artists out there who do amazing stellar laudable work every year, who toil in bars and clubs. Who make independent albums released on shoestring. Adam is hobnobbing and admired by industry greats, he had a #1 album, he is receiving awards and accolades for his work in human rights, he is travelling around the world singing to devoted audiences... But no that's not enough. I believe Adam was speaking from his heart when he admonished a few years ago that "entitlement isn't sexy" he wants to make music and sing which he is getting ton do in spades - the rest is gravy.

I don't think we can say for a certainty that radio will never play Adam. Radio played WWFM a lot. That gives me hope that his next music will get played as much or more than WWFM. Also think that the Grammys should separate male and female pop category again. It seems that male pop artists have no realistic chance of being nominated with the glut of pop female artists out there.
