1. Ellen Degeneres: While the new generation may simply think she is just a funny lady who hosts a TV show, we all know she made history by coming out of the closet. She stirred controversy and at the time, homophobia was alive and well so it made things a bit harder for her career. Thankfully, she didn’t back down and has carved a career out of making people laugh, think and smile. When she stopped her comedy routine to hug her fan, we knew she was the real deal and we love her even more for it.

2. RuPaul: The name says it all. And while Drag Race is in its fifth season and more popular than ever, it wasn’t always that way. Once a misunderstood misfit, RuPaul became an icon by breaking the rules, never apologizing for it and hosting her own show on VH1 where even Cher joined the couch. Always spreading love and positivity, RuPaul proved that you didn’t have to be a mean bitch to get your point across. In fact, Just Be A Lady.

3. Adam Lambert: This American Idol alum changed the way we saw television by screaming to the beat of his own drum and wearing eyeliner to solidify he was not going to conform to rules. Dubbed as “Glambert” Adam sang into our hearts and became an icon. His highly publicized man on man kiss was blown out of proportion and almost hurt his career. He’s tested the waters time and again only to prove that being Gay isn’t a bad thing. 

4. Madonna: She may not be Gay, but she is definitely an honorary icon because of her mass contribution to the gay community. She has never shied away from controversy and will defend her gays nail and tooth. Even recently, she wore a boy scout uniform to protest their rules. Madonna made a splash in the 90’s with “Vogue” and since then has inspired gay men and women around the world to just be you. Madonna is still sold out in concert sales til’ this day and no doubt it is because of gay men who absolutely worship her and rightfully so.
