Thank you for your response, Cassie, regarding that voice video posted above. You kind of confirm what I was thinking while scratching my head at some of the categorizations.
First of all, let me say, I really appreciate a video that focuses more on the variety of singing styles Adam has at his disposal rather than just one range alone, like so many others do. We need more of that, actually.
But I think with Adam having trained his voice so far outside the realm of the traditional vocal training, the efforts to categorize different styles remind me somehow of the attempts in the wine industry to describe wine:
elegant cherry, full blossom, aromas of green apple and pear to create a medium body, complex aromas....
We all have different taste buds and you have often pointed out that we also all hear a bit differently. We probably have no idea how differently we are hearing and perceiving sound, because obviously we are each only familiar with our own set of ears and maybe we would be quite surprised what the world sounds like, if we had a chance to hear it with the ears and brain of somebody else.
I was a bit lost with their categories and tbh I don't quite hear the metal you are talking about either. The bottom-line though is, Adam has an enormous variety of vocal nuances he can pull from for any given tone or group of notes. This video focuses mostly on his ability in his upper register, but most of us love his warm lower register too. And even there he has two or three different ways of singing, then in the middle of his vocal range he can add enormous variety. And then when it comes to the range where he leaves all others in the dust just by range alone, he seems to have endless ability to play and alter his sound.
I appreciate the technical specifications of what he does or might be doing with his voice, but to be honest, I don't really quite understand them.
I thought, perhaps I try to speak more 'wine speak' when it comes to Adam's voice, so I just played around and wrote down what I am hearing in this video. Someone else want to play? Here is my version.
0:05 crystal clear, ice-scating and glass shattering, ringing like the aftersounds of a a hundred small bells, exiting, a bit alarming, not a warm tone, but yet beautiful tone.
0:23 one of Adam's many story-telling voices, this one, the sad, whining, despairing voice, vulnerable, emotive, but also determined, not a weak voice at all, actually alarming in a different way, especially at the end
0:53 Let me give it to ya, let me tell you, howling, with rock edge, stagy, showy,
1:25 Dominant, resonance, resonance, resonance, incredible power and projection, self-confident, masculine, smoldering, HOT
1:50 Back to ice-scating, this time with runs and jumps and not just one straight line as before, exiting, powerful, wild, sharp, brilliant
2:14 Back to dramatic story telling, still vulnerable and emotive, but loving, pouring his full heart out, heart wrenching. Adam has this ability to sing with a pop voice, but using operatic breath control, this is one good example of that, but he does it quite regularly. Would love to hear much more of this, but unlikely with the present dance/funk direction. Sadz about that actually.
2:41 Runs and jumps and loops and bounces, rock edge, over the top, controlled chaos, showy
2:53 Let's mix broadway and rock, rich, colorful, brilliant, controlled crooning in a different dimension
3:20 Perfected rock voice, snarling, growling and rock howling, mile high shouts
3:47 Playful, easygoing, rock runs, mile high singing
3:58 Angelic, beautiful and I want to hear more of this too, nobody can sing like this and then progression into rock sound. For me one of the most fantastic, hooked for life kind of moments
4:10 I am not even sure what I am hearing, obviously echo, reverberate to the max, but some seems his voice and some seems technology/voice alteration, full, rich sound, layer upon layer.
Oh, and here is the video:
