I don't think there is any problem anymore going to the SFGN website and giving it hits, in fact, I actually think the opposite, tbh.
This newspaper or better the many people that contribute to it, have been taught quite a few lessons by us over the last few weeks. I would not want one of them to be: Write a shit-stirring article and you get tons of hits, write a rebuttal or publish reader responses and you don't get that much traffic. So, I'd say, click happily away.
I agree with what others wrote, these letters they received from Glamberts are moving and they have clearly been read and noticed by SFGN staff, which is more than you can say from many other news outlets. They published a very good selection and representation of all the ones they have gotten. Glamberts made their mark.
a) just from a stylistic or journalistic standpoint, most of these responses are better formulated and worded than any of the articles written by their own staff
b) quite apparently, the responses are better researched than the articles the SFGN allows to get published. The discussion brought many facts to the publishers attention which they clearly did not previously have.
c) The quality of the responses in both substantive topics, as well as in its emotional testimony are such that you cannot help but sit up and take note. Even if Adam were to someone the clown that Norm Kent thought he was, if Adam leaves such an impression in other people, you have to question your first impression. I think there are multiple people at that magazine doing exactly that right now. Not sure that Norm Kent is one of them, he may be beyond hope, but around him quite a few others are impressed.
d) I have no idea what the circulation or readership of such a magazine is, but they experienced a bump and need to digest that experience. Perhaps they are underestimating not only the intelligence of the Glamberts, but perhaps also that of their usual potential readership. It would be interesting how others, who are not Glamberts reacted to all this. Did a few people see the back and forth and had a mind change or second thoughts about Adam based on what they are reading?
e) A lot of topics of substance were brought up during this back and forth interaction. I.e. the role of the straight community in moving the causes of the gay community forward, the topic of diversity within the gay community, the tendency within the gay community to lash out against their own, the types of representation of the gay community and their relative effectiveness, the impression people have and the impact their actions have.
There was a lot of ground covered and at least the SFGN did not cover up their tracks or their own mediocre journalistic abilities, but rather let the discussion flow both internally within their own editorial staff, as well as externally with their readers. In many ways it is one battle at a time, Adam again started a shit storm by doing absolutely nothing, except being himself.
This paper is what it is, this ain't high class journalism. But they DID make a few people think, and if only within their own staff and that is a start. I am pretty sure that we will not get another such smear against Adam from this paper, even though I presume they will cover him regularly now to get hits.
