Cool that Jason Collins came out. I totally support him for that. It is brave for an athlete in a major sport to come out, and he is the first. However, I am a little sour-grapes-y that no president or former president publicly supported Adam for being the first out artist to sign a major label record deal or for being the first out artist to be #1 on the Billboard 200. Likewise all the support for Frank Ocean for his blog where he described having feelings for a man, but never used words such as gay or bi to describe himself, and has not, as far as I know, publicly supported any LGBT organizations or charities. Just complaining about the cultural inconsistencies. Perhaps everyone just expects pop stars to be gay, so no extra recognition is needed. peace&love Uhm, Clinton knows Collins personally through his daughter Chelsea, so I think that has more to do with his personal support than anything.

Politicos are always happy to let the public get way out front on an issue and then run to the head of the parade as if it were their idea all along.

Of course, the exact opposite is true, so I don't why why people like Adam or Jake Shears or Beth Ditto who risk their careers by just being themselves from the beginning are not given their due (by so many.) And just between you and me, nonotme, there was a very heated discussion on Twitter last week about Ocean never indentifying as gay. I and a few others were accused of saying he is not being gay enough. Which was not the case. We were just questioning if he is actually gay, bi, or does he indentify with this community. It was all in reference to the GLAAD music awards. And from my soapbox today, I really want Rolling Stone or Billboard to write a cover story on why radio does not play gay artists. Even before Adam, Scissor Sisters and Gossip have had VERY radio friendly songs. Why didn't they get played?

I think that when an african american athlete or Rap artist come out It's really news. A great many in the African American Community are very church oriented and have a very hard time with the LGBTQ folks. This will take some getting used to for them, the more walls that come down, the more acceptance. When Don Lemmon came out in a Black magazine ,he asked the community to please accept him for who he is without prejudice. Adam is in an industry that has many gay people, one of the places where they can really prosper and shine. Unfortunately radio is owned by conservatives which is a tremendous draw back for Adam and others who may be afraid to come out . If he were to go to Broadway or do more TV I think he would be very welcomed at this point in his career. Movies not so much.. many of gay folks there seem to be homophobic and are unwilling to come out from the shadows.
Just my take on what's happening.
To paraphrase MILK .. The more the LGBTQ community show themselves the faster equality will happen.IMHO It's hard to dislike or be afraid of the very people you know, members of your family, your teachers, doctors, pastors, your friends.etc..They become just ordinary people trying to live their lives with love and respect.
For a few minutes I thought about Adam's hard time when he came out,but calmed myself down & thought well the more gay people come out ,the easier time Adam will eventually have. As far as Frank Ocean, the gay community has made him one of their own, a gay icon, like they did with Adam.. Whether they wanted the title or not ,they have it.

Mys*&@^#r,
I agree that people who are well known, then come out, often get more recognition and public support. But it makes sense in a way because the only way others can support someone is if they know about them, so the already-well-known person who comes out receives more public support.
On the Frank Ocean front, I support him for the personal experience he made public. That could have been a real problem in the hip-hop corner of the music world. Since he has not said much more, it makes one wonder if he self-identifies as gay or bi or straight or ?? Perhaps he has not answered that question for himself as yet. I threw him into my little-bit-sour-grapes-y comment because he got so many supportive public comments right away.
LOL Would have been cool if Jay-Z and Clinton had congratulated Adam on being the first out #1 on Billboard. Would have helped Trespassing to sell more... hahah
But, yeah, there are people everywhere who deserve more recognition for their ground breaking efforts. True for many of those who work for LGBT acceptance and equality, and for many in other fields as well.
peace&love
ETA- Melliemom, I see you made many good points, too.

Byron Flitsch @byronjflitsch Glamberts!! @adamlambert is so sexy he GLOWS! buzzworthy.mtv.com/2013/04/29/adam-lambert-heart-sunglasses-japan-photo/ … Star Spotting: Adam Lambert's Glam Is Glowing! (PHOTO)Posted by Byron Flitsch in Celebrity, Photos Adam Lambert's glam is so powerful that IT GLOWS. If any of you Glamberts have wondered what it'd be like to spend an evening out with Adam Lambert (WE WONDER THIS EVERY SINGLE NIGHT), please enjoy this fantastic photo of Adam WERQUING some flashy heart-shaped glasses while out with his BFFs. Besides the obvious note that Adam looks good in any pair of shades, we've just been handed some breaking news: Adam's glam is so powerful that it glows! Those shades are pulsing at 100 Glam-a-Watts of pure sexiness! (Which is now officially a legit measurement of energy soon to be taught in every science class.) The "Ray Of Light" singer shared his photo on Instagram with the caption, "Back in Japan...," and we are IN LOVE with Adam's attempt at being goofy with that "Derp" face. (LOL! Nice try, Adam, but your "neck porn" and leather pants will forever outweigh any attempts at being dorky.) But we're mostly loving that our Prince of Glam never misses a chance to remind the world to have fun, be yourself, and to not give an EFF what anyone thinks. While some people hit up the club acting like VIP big deals, Adam ain't got time for that -- PUH-LEASE. Adam's all, "Haters can hate, but I'm ALWAYS gonna illuminate." Photo credit: @realadamlambert

Oh, I hope you are right. And it does make sense because I believe Nile is in LA to work with Avicii. From Rolling Stone.... Nile is in LA to work with Avicii and Adam! However the collab is going to go, neither of those 2 sing! They need a voice and why not get the best?! I am hoping that Adam is on Avicii's release cause that is this summer.

I think that we have to remember that this is pro sports we are talking about here.
We as fans of Adam, know the struggles that he has faced and still faces in the music industry. We know that the industry is not as open and as forward thinking as most people assume it is. But I also think the majority would see it as much easier to be out in music than in pro sports. That's just the way it is.
If it took until 2009 for an out gay man to be signed to a major label contract, and took until 2012 for an out gay man to achieve #1 on the US Billboard charts, it's nearly a miracle it only took until 2013 for a pro athlete to come out. It is a very big deal to a lot of people, and Jason Collins has done an extraordinary and very brave thing in the eyes of many.
Like Adam, he will inspire many young people and propel gay rights forward. It's a good thing.
