Has anyone mentioned Mad World as a possible duet with Angie? I am not suggesting it or endorsing it, just saying it seems like not a far fetched possibility. Someone upthread mentioned Clay sang Bridge Over Trouble Water on one of his visits to AI and that was the song that made him a favorite during his season. I can't imaging they would sing a TP song. It will be nice to see Adam on TV again. Yes. I thought either WWFM or MW. I think MW could be a moment.

Likes is subjective. Vocal prowess is not! I disagree with that, depends entirely on your criteria for "vocal prowess" which is pretty subjective. But aren't things like staying on pitch, range, breathing skills and such not subjective things? I mean I can say "Whoa that is so off pitch (or key or whatever the technical term is.) As opposed to to, "I don't like WGWG, so will never be a fan of Phillip Phillips!" That is totally subjective. Oh wait! Writing that just totally made me realize what that guy was doing! He was writing about who he is a fan of! Not who the best Idols were! He should have titled that, "His Favorite Idols!" For instance, I would put David Cook in my top 5 favorites. But not in my Top 5 best. << Does that make sense? nationalglampoon, I agree that Haley is one of the best! Did I ever tell you I saw her do a show in a venue of only 100 people! So fun!!

Staying on pitch is objective yep. Range is kinda subjective since sometimes people will hit notes that are clearly outside their range i.e. little croaks or Danny Gokey screams. But it really depends, cause like some people say Janis Joplin had crap technique and as such is a bad singer, but she put so much energy and emotion into everything that's she wayyy better than a lot of "trained" singers in my book. Or others might think that Durbin is a better singer than Adam cause he's hit higher notes. All depends on your criteria. Some other stuff like projection of the voice can be measured to some extent I suppose but I think trying to rank singers or anything musical objectively is pretty moot P.S. Super jealous of the Haley thing!!

I loved the Mad World duet with Cyndi Lauper. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvxcbssvEOo

I am excited that he is going to be on American TV again. The Chinese have been having all the fun and I miss him.

I agree with glampoon that it is difficult and perhaps moot to define what makes a great singer, or the best singer. Yes, the ability to sing on pitch is a pretty universal criterion. Other than that, things tend to be subjective. I think if you speak with classically trained singers, they would come up with similar lists of characteristics that would include breathing and breath support; a rich, full tone with lots of harmonic resonance and no buzz or rasp; control of one's range and registers so that the singer can sound seamless from low to high with no discernable break (change in the tonal quality of the note), and can sing each note strongly and loudly or softly and tenderly at will; clear articulation; no sound of tension, tightness or strain; control of one's voice so as to sing "riffs" with rapidly changing notes accurately; control of one's vibrato, and projection (the ability to make your voice soar above the backing instruments into a large hall). I am sure there are other characteristics as well, this is just off the top of my head.
However, to listeners who are not classically trained and do not listen to classically trained voices, the characteristics of a good voice may be quite different. They may prefer the sound of a belted voice sung in short phrases with frequent breaths. They may like singers who chop up phrases and endings. They may like a raspy, grovelly, or smokey tone to the voice. They like a breathy quality to a singing voice. Some people like that noticeable flip from chest voice to falsetto or head voice; it is very common in pop singers. Many judge the quality of a voice by the range of the singer: the higher the note, the better the singer, regardless of the tone achieved. For many fans of pop and rock and dance music, the lyrics are not as important as the beat and the drive of a song, so clear articulation is not a big deal. Many fans of the pop and rock sound really like to hear a voice pushing and straining for power and high notes. Some do not like vibrato in a voice at all. Pop and rock singers do not really need to be able to project their voice in a concert hall. The sound system will take care of that. Many think that classically trained singers sound "phony", pretentious and unnatural; they prefer something more raw and "real" and gutsy.
So, while I think that Adam's voice and technique are heavenly, I can understand why others just don't "get" what is so special about his voice. They don't hear what I hear, they don't respond viscerally to the sound of his voice like I do. Different strokes for different folks.

I am not expecting anything different or new for Adam & Angie's duet. It just isn't what they do for the finale. It is all about familiarity and songs that are known.
