I am reminded of the whole scarlet letter A on his tophat for Glamnation and how didn't talk about that aspect of it when he originally talked about his concepts for the tour but only several months down the line when he was asked specifically about whether their was a link to "The Scarlet Letter" then he did admit to it. I think that is one of the things that is a bit subversive about him is that he usually does have "deep hidden meanings" as Nile Rodgers calls it but he WANTS to allow people to discover those meanings on their own rather than "shoving them down our throats".
By not talking about those things out right it allows people the freedom to see or not see which is a way of being inclusive, and getting his message out without necessarily beating people over the head with it. It's subtle.
Bono talks of this about U2 music. Bono is more often than not rather deliberately vague with his lyrics so that the songs are open to a wide range of interpretation but because his spirituality IS very important to him when you look closely at their songs their are layers and layers of spiritual meaning to them, even the sexy ones. Or, I should say, especially the sexy ones because Bono uses sexual imagery to talk about God all the time.
