Adam Lambert Honored at GLAAD Media Awards

At Saturday night's 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco, "American Idol" Season 8 runner-up and openly gay pop star Adam Lambert was presented with the Davidson/Valentini Award, which is given to a member of the LGBT community who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights. Adam also tied with Frank Ocean in the category of Outstanding Musical Artist.



When picking up his award from the Spice Girls' Mel B, Adam--always a compelling and unfiltered public speaker--gave a humorous but sincere acceptance speech about the trials and tribulations of being an out-and-proud entertainer, admitting that the situation sometimes "drives him f***in' crazy."

Said Adam: "One person thinks you should be more this, one person thinks you should be more that; the label thinks this, the fans think that; your family wishes this; this community wants you to shut up, that community wants it louder; the conservatives, the liberals…" He then broke into song, singing a line from "Whataya Want From Me" to amusingly emphasize his point.

"The best we can do is keep it real, and to spread a message of acceptance…If we can inspire even one person to open their mind or another to be who they want to be, whether they are gay, straight, old, young, man, woman, black, or white, then it's worth being objectified by the sometimes frustrating world of media sensationalism."

SAN FRANCISCO, May 12 (UPI) -- Singer Adam Lambert and the upcoming Alan Cumming film "Any Day Now " were big honorees in the latest round of GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco.

The San Francisco leg of the 24th annual awards took place Saturday, The Hollywood Reporter said. Earlier portions took place in New York and Los Angeles.

Melanie Brown of "America's Got Talent" and Spice Girls fame, presented Lambert with the Davidson/Valentini Award for his work to promote LGBT causes as an openly gay performer.

Lambert also won the award for Outstanding Music Artist, which he tied for with artist Frank Ocean. Lambert was honored for his album "Trespassing" and Ocean for "Channel Orange."

"Any Day Now," a drama about a gay couple's struggle to adopt a boy with Down syndrome in the 1970s, directed Travis Fine, took home the prize for Outstanding Film - Limited Release.

The San Francisco Giants took home the Corporate Leader Award and California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom won the Golden Gate Award

GLAAD is a non-profit organization that promotes the image of LGBT people in the media.

Mel B Presents Adam Lambert With Davidson/Valentini Award at 2013 Glaad Awards

Mel B, Spice Girl and a new judge on America's Got Talent, presented international pop star Adam Lambert with the Davidson/Valentini Award Saturday night, May 11th, at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco. Lambert was also the co-recipient of the award for Outstanding Music Artist for his albumTrespassing; he tied with Frank Ocean for Ocean's debut album Channel Orange. Speaking of the challenges associated with being an out entertainer, Lambert said, "We are right in The Middle of two generations with two different perspectives but one common thread - love. With all the differences of opinion both within the LGBT community and elsewhere, the best we can do is to keep it real and to spread a message of acceptance. If we can inspire even one person to open their mind, or another to be who they want to be, whether they're gay or straight, old or young, man or woman, black or white - then it's worth being objectified by the sometimes frustrating world of media sensationalism."

Lambert continued, "Thank you to GLAAD for recognizing my efforts, because I put a lot of effort into this. I think about it a lot (it makes me crazy), but my goal is to try to represent both myself and my community proudly."

The Davidson/Valentini Award, named after GLAAD's first executive director Craig Davidson and his partner Michael Valentini, is presented to an out LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality for the LGBT community. Previous Davidson/Valentini honorees include Lee Daniels, Ilene Chaiken, Alec Mapa, B.D. Wong and Sandra Bernhard.

Upon the release of Lambert's second album Trespassing, of which he is the executive producer and principal writer, Lambert became the first out LGBT artist to reach number one on the Billboard 200. The album made numerous year-end "best of" lists, including Rolling Stone and People, and Lambert supported the album by embarking on a successful world tour. Lambert has participated in Spirit Day in the past by going purple to show support for LGBT youth and has also performed with legendary rock band Queen in critically-acclaimed sold-out shows across Europe.

Also at the event, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom received the Golden Gate Award. The reigning World Series champion San Francisco Giants received the Corporate Leader Award. Adam Lambert and Frank Ocean both won trophies at last night’s GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco. Melanie Brown from the Spice Girls presented the onetime American Idol-er with the Davidson/Valenti Award which is given to a member of the LGBT community who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights. Meanwhile, Lambert and Ocean tied in the category of Outstanding Musical Artist. Other awards went to the film Any Day Now and to writer Marc Lamont Hill for his article, “Why Aren’t We Fighting for CeCe McDonald?“

After being presented with the Davidson/Valenti Award Lambert praised the “Stonewall generation who paved the way, they are proud rebels who have waved the rainbow banner.” You can see Lambert’s entire speech below.
