No talks have been confirmed, but the former finalist and glam rocker is very interested in the job.
"Dude, if they called me, I'd be like, 'Yeah, sign me up. Where do I sign?' It would be very cool. It would be exciting," Lambert said backstage after the season 12 finale on Thursday, May 16.
Lambert had performed on the show with finalist Angie Miller. Candice Glover won season 12, beating runner-up Kree Harrison.
Veteran judge Randy Jackson announced last week that he will leave the FOX singing contest series after Thursday's finale.
This year, Jackson, who had served as a judge since the show's debut, was joined by newbies Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban, whose futures on the series is still up in the air. A casting shakeup, the latest in several of the past few years, is reportedly planned amid lackluster ratings.
Lambert, who placed second on season 8 of "American Idol" in 2009, said "it would be a really cool opportunity to help people coming into the show and help them keep their vision focused."
"It does become very overwhelming when you get in there and there's so many people telling you what they think you should do, and your family and the judges and the producers and all the other contestants that might be screwing with your head, so I think it would be nice, as a judge, to be able to help people stay focused," he said. "It gets crazy, you know, and to help them reach their dreams. That would be such a reward."
"American Idol," Lambert added, like like a "boot camp" for singers.
"I mean, you get up there every week and they work you to the bone. You have a lot to do and all sorts of things that train you. You're in the studio. That was training for me -- really working fast and getting your ideas out. Doing all the on-camera stuff, those commercials and all the interviews. That's stuff I hadn't really done before so that is a skill within itself."
"And then, of course, being on stage in front of a big audience," he said. "Millions of people behind the cameras, getting used to your nerves and how to conquer those -- that's a trip. So yeah, it sets you up for a lot. It prepares you. And I think it does a really good job."
Adam Lambert on performing with QueenAfter his time on "American Idol," Lambert, like many finalists and winners, went on to pursue a solo music career. Last summer, he performed several concerts with legendary rock band Queen in Europe.
"Queen was awesome!" he said. "I had so much fun. I couldn't believe they asked me, first of all. I was like, 'Me, you want me to do it? Really?' And I was really flattered and terrified because I thought there's no one else but Freddie Mercury. No one else can compare. And I thought, 'Oh, God, everybody's gonna hate me because I'm trying to be doing what Freddie did.'"
