Revelers brave cold to fight AIDS at Vienna ball

(Reuters) - Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, singer Elton John and actor Hilary Swank joined thousands of costumed revelers on Saturday at Europe's biggest AIDS charity event, Vienna's Life Ball.

Dressed in skimpy costumes for the ball's 1,001 Nights theme, or simply in extravagant drag, party-goers braved unseasonally chilly temperatures of 8 degrees Celsius (46 degrees Fahrenheit) for the outdoor party.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, addressing the gathering in a video message, urged the world not to let up in the fight against AIDS, which has killed 30 million people since the auto-immune disease was first recognized at the start of the 1980s.

"A generation free of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is now in sight," he told the crowd in the gardens of Vienna's City Hall. "But unless we intensify our response, a million children could get HIV by 2015."

The annual ball, now in its 21st year, has grown from a small gay-community event to a society fixture, attracting celebrity guests from around the world.

Highlights included a Scheherazade-themed ballet, a fashion show by Italian designer Roberto Cavalli and a performance by singer Adam Lambert.

Those guests wearing costumes judged by the organizers' "style police" to be exceptional could win half-price admission to the Vienna ball, for which tickets cost up to 3,000 euros.

The event raised over 2 million euros ($2.6 million) last year, much of it donated to the Clinton Health Access Initiative to reduce HIV infection among babies in Africa.

Africa accounts for more than two-thirds of the world's cases of HIV, with 1.8 million new HIV infections and 1.2 million people dying of AIDS-related illnesses in 2011, according to the United Nations.

Saturday night in Vienna, Austria, Glamerican Idol Adam Lambert performed at the Life Ball — Europe's biggest fundraiser for HIV and AIDS causes — rocking not only a new song, but an exotic new look as well.

Adam's ab-fabulously campy, over-the-top, Ali Baba-themed performance (for such illustrious spectators as Bill Clinton and Elton John) featured a troupe of shirtless dancing thieves. But of course Adam was the main focus, taking the Hofburg Palace stage resplendent in a brocade genie outfit and matching jeweled turban.

Is Adam granting me three wishes here? Okay then, here goes, Adam: 1) Please be the next "American Idol" judge, 2) Please put out a new album within the next year, 3) Please sell sequined turbans at the merch booth on your next tour.

Perhaps more exciting than Adam's sparkling ensemble was the fact that he sang a sparkling new song at the Life Ball, "Love Wins Over Glamour," written especially for the event. The title was ironic, considering how lavishly glamorous this concert was, but the song's universal message came through loud and clear.

Adam Lambert hits the stage wearing a turban for a performance at the 2013 Life Ball on Saturday (May 25) in Vienna, Austria.

The 31-year-old singer performed the song “Love Wins Over Glamour” during the event, which is Europe’s largest fundraiser for HIV and AIDS causes. He is also pictured below arriving at the airport in Vienna the day before.

Fergie, who is pregnant with her first child, hosted the event and met up with Kelly Osbourne on the red carpet before the gala began.

Azealia Banks hit the stage during the show wearing a furry cat costume!

FYI: Fergie is wearing a Tom Ford dress with a Valentino purse and shoes.

How did Adam get selected to do the Life Ball Song?

The event announcers said that Adam approaching the Life Ball 2013 planner and wanted to be part of this event.


What about the coat?

I have spent much more time investigating Adam’s outfit than I care to admit. At first I thought it was a new coat but then.....

But then I engaged in an effort worthy of the best intelligence agency. My conclusion is this entire outfit was made in LA and Adam was heavily involved with putting it together – from his closet. Then, of course, an enormous number of Swarovski Crystals and miles of metallic thread and braid were added.

As far as I can determine, the only new item is the Turban.

The fabulous jeweled coat is either his GNT Sleepwalker coat, or an exact copy, most likely embellished by Marco Marco who is one of Adam’s and many A List performers’ goto designer for embellished garments. I believe the boots are one’s Adam has worn for a long time (perhaps Diesel)...also most likely embellished by Marco Marco. The pants are from his closet, the bronze leather pants that he has worn on many occasions. The long black shirt is one that he has worn many times. And the black rock gloves are certainly his.

Now back to the coat. Here is a close-up of the collar – and they match. The embellishment covers up the old decorations perfectly.




The Sleepwalker coat was partially lightweight fabric and that made me think it was not possible to be the same. But the upper part of the coat is a different, heavier fabric, and that is where most of the heavy crystals were placed.







I believe these are the boots that Adam is wearing.

The season 13 panel is starting to take shape with the former finalist close to coming onboard, says a source.

A source close to the dealings tells The Hollywood Reporter that former finalist Jennifer Hudson is in negotiations to fill one of the three seats. Vulture had previously reported that she was in the running as part of an all-alumni panel, which would also include season one winner Kelly Clarkson and possibly Clay Aiken, runner-up on season two and Celebrity Apprentice star, or Adam Lambert, who came in second on season eight.
