I have mixed feeling about the New F word campaign. It reminds me of the "fuck hate" group. It does not bother me, personally, but I know the cavalier use of these words and gestures are offensive to many people. I think it reinforces the stereotype of godless and immoral to some of those offended people. So that does make me a bit uncomfortable. I thought the new f word was Friend. It all seemed so innocent and sweet with the intro video we saw so many months ago. Nevertheless, Adam looks amazingly hot flipping the bird in the photo....much better than he did at the AMA's , imo. I am sorry they are so lacking in creativity the only thing they could think of is an obscenity. If they are trying to reach young people, this doesn't set a good example. Everyone knows what the hand gesture and "F" word mean and it sure doesn't evoke pleasant things like "friend." Can't say I disagree but this was the thought behind it by Elliot Friend London Co-Founder, Director Friend Movement Maybe a new paradigm for the motion www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151698385455120&set=a.84190930119.114385.529090119&type=1Elliot Friend London We view photo's so different than we did 20 years ago. Sometimes we forget that photos were used for art not just for status feeds:) I wanted to take a moment to give you my insight to the meaning of The New F Word photo... When you look at this photo, you need to see an inner voice. Move past the Finger... Think of the voice inside your head. The voice that frankly makes huge choices for you in your life:) When I was bullied as a teen, I would cower and hate myself. What I would of done to have seen my role models tell me to be confident. How if I only had that confidence in myself than maybe my choices as an adult would of been more powerful. When your inner voice starts to convince you that you are less than, you believe it little by little. You might not want to admit it, but it will effect your adult choices. This campaign is to help people of all ages have that conversation with themselves. When someone brings you down, let that inner voice come back with empowerment. "F.U. I am a great person, I might be different to you, but I am not going to let you effect me" That is what this campaign is about... Its about taking a tangible negative gesture and making it a positive intellectual choice. So help me share our vision... Elliot D London

Elliot D London I just don't think telling someone to interpret a hand gesture as "f**k you" is helpful in overcoming negative connotations, no matter what affirmation follows. I mean, after all, isn't that what the hand gesture means? How is this turning it into a positive? Reacting to an obscene gesture with an obscene word does not elevate the conversation.

I just watched Titanium again and a new thought came into my head. Well, new for me. Many have commented on how gracious Adam was, and how he let Angie shine. This time, listening, I wondered how Adam could sing so forcefully and powerfully in parts of the song towards the end and not totally overwhelm Angie's voice. He was seriously belting high notes at the end. We know how much ring that usually produces.
Thinking about it, I suspect Adam had his microphone adjusted so his voice did NOT stand out as a soloist. "Pull back on the reverb, on the high frequencies, make the sound more mellow. Punch up Angie's to have more sparkle and edge." It sounds like something Adam would do stylistically, artistically, and as a "supporting player," not the featured singer. What do others think?

When you need 250 words to explain a visual image ... I hear what you ... and others....are saying here....but the fact is, we are assuming the audience for these messages are mature, temper-controlled adults reacting to other adults. If a young person being bullied by multiple of his/her peers simply politely asked then to stop or tried to reason with them they would be ignored at best, and beaten/laughed at most likely. The only thing a bully will even remotely respond to is the F.U. That is sad and certainly doesn't elevate the argument...you are right. But there is no way to "elevate" this sort of thing. Sad tale but true. If all it took was reason, this would not happen and the question would be a moot one. If parents and teachers and authorities TRULY took it seriously and actually punished the perpetrators, again....it wouldn't happen. But it does and I do not think you are doing a young person any favours telling them to 'be nice' .... I wish I had a better answer. What do you suppose a young gay male should say to his tormentors? I am serious....what should he say that would in some way make him feel safer and in some small way, empowered.

Just this morning I was reading a blog I was linked to by a friend who had a write up about the jewelry she makes and took a gander back at some older posts and ran across this one. About a kid who felt bullied in elementary school and his mom. Has elements of both the FU and the friend in this post. www.stylespygirl.com/2013/05/24/not-a-fashion-post-its-all-about-a-boy/ Here is the friend portion.

I had wondered if there was something done to adjust the song mix to keep it balanced. IMO Adam needs to do more duets -- I know that is not a popular idea with many fans but he really shines in collaborative performances. And I mean he is literally shiny -- he almost glows.
