Ok, going to post my recap in sections here. 2012-06-29 Universal Studios Orlando, FL Summer Concert Series Recap This is going to be as long as my day was so be prepared. LOL Arrival I decided to go early after butterknife said she was driving in an expected to get there by 8:00. Originally planned to get there right about the same time but when getting ready the night before I decided to make a real go of it and planned to get to the parking turn styles by 6am. Made it at 6:08 and had to wait about 10 or 15 minutes until they opened the parking. Unfortunately the drawback to being that early parking wise is that regular parking then puts you on the roof of the parking garage so your car is in direct sunlight on top a huge cement structure. Good thing I wasn’t going to be going back to it until after dark. LOL Then it is down two flights of stairs and over the walkway to the center hub where bag check is. Other people are already there waiting having come in by bus, taxi, drop off or on foot. Struck up a conversation with a few other glamberts and ended up sticking with a mother and daughter from West Virginia (T & M)who had never seen Adam live yet. They let us through bag check about 6:30 am and we walk to the park entrance. My bigmouth and inability to navigate while talking had the three of us accidentally ending up at the Islands of Adventure(IOA) entrance because a big crowd were heading that way due to the fact the IOA was actually opening at 8 am as opposed to 9 am for Universal (USF). Once we realized our error we traipse across to USF. There are probably about 20 entrance lines into the park and we lined up at one set of turn styles behind two probably high school age girls. By the time they opened the park the 5 of us had a plan. The two HS girls and T’s daughter (15?) planned to take off hell bent for leather as soon as they went through so as to get first in line at the concert site. T & I planned to run/walk as fast as we could manage.Worked like a charm and we ended up the first 5 people in line. Back to the park opening. They pull a couple of kids from the lines and get them to read a cute little script to “officially open the park”. They actually let everyone in a little before 8:30 because there were probably 20-30 people in each turnstyle line by then. Script read, everyone applauds, the gates open and we’re off. If anyone was running behind us they didn’t get close enough to challenge our lead and we made it to the pen area and spread out towels that we all had to sit on and made ourselves comfortable. The 2 HS girls were seasoned Summer Concert goers and knew the routine well. This first pen area was at least half way full within just a few minutes or so. It was probably about a 10 by 30 or 40 foot area along the left side or the concert yard (when facing stage) and ended at a concession stand(convenient). The entrance to the Rockit Roller Coaster ride is just past this area. Not long afterward our “handler” for the day, Jerome showed up to brief us on the proceedings and give us our orange section tickets. As he explained the numbers on the tickets were not important, just the color and the ticket is what allowed you to come and go from the pen. Having the ticket guaranteed you a spot in the pen but where you are in line beyond that depends entirely on the good will of all the other peeps in the pen. So if you are at the front and leave you have to trust that the others near you will let you back to your spot. Of course we assured him that we are all one big happy Glamily at which he groaned and assured us he had no intentions of learning a new vocabulary for the day. J He would check on us throughout the day making sure everyone was keeping hydrated and asking if anyone needed health services, etc. He joked about us being on our own once the main area was opened and cautioned us not to pass out when Adam showed up saying it would be a shame if we had to leave in an ambulance which was of course greeted with a chorus of corrections to “Glambulance” to which Jerome just hung his head and said “NO NEW VOCABULARY”. LOL Here’s a shot from our pen area. Shortly after we got our tickets the girls took off to ride some rides. They came and went throughout the day. T left for a bit too. I left briefly for bathroom break, then to get lunch. Luckily we at the very front had a bit of shade so the sun wasn’t too bad. I had my hat that Irish gave me on the Miami pride trip and a small soft sided cooler with a bottle of water and one of those blue ice packs. The techs started setting equipment up on stage about 12 o’clock. The band and Adam didn’t come out until later. About 3:00 in anticipation of sound check everybody stood up and this is the bit where it got a little dicey for a while. Everybody started crowding in once they had all picked up there stuff so we were getting crowded in tight by the corner where the fence would be opened. Naturally this made everything MUCH hotter. The security started telling us at the front that we had to form a single file line and they wouldn’t open the gate until we did. We kept telling them that we couldn’t move back to form a line until they got the people in the back to back up. In reality they weren’t going to be letting us in til after sound check but this caused us in the front to be a bit stressed out because they said if we didn’t form a line we’d loose our spots. M and one of the HS girls got a bit faint from the heat but between my hat fanning them and my ice pack we kept them cool enough so they didn’t faint although it came close for a bit. One lady did faint and was later helped out in a wheel chair but she ended up fine in the end (more on that later) There was a section on the left side of the stage that was fenced of in reserve for the hearing impaired as Universal provides sign language interpreters for the concert. Turned out they had 3 or 4 of them who traded off songs and boy were they energetic. Adam’s songs sure gave them a workout. Jerome had explained that when we entered the main area we had to go around to the other side of that fence and the rest of the front of the stage was ours. He had told us that all you had to do to be in that area was say you needed the interpreter and that by law he wasn’t allowed to make you show any kind of proof so yes anyone could fake it and get there. I had passed this info along to glamtealady and she later told the woman who fainted about it so that she could have a chance to get up close after all even though she had lost her spot in the pen. She ended up with a good spot there without being crowded. During sound check they were also setting up the screens on the sides of the stage and once that was all done they finally opened the gate. We had to hand in our little orange tickets as we went through so it wasn’t a huge stampede but we all did run to secure our spots on the front rail. Here’swhere I ended up. to be continued
