If you widen the "hickey" pic to include all the the girls face you can see there is a similar red bruise type mark on her cheek.
I vote for odd lighting.

Oh, I didn't know the fandom decided it wasn't a hickey. It did seem kind of highschoolish -- I remember the boys used to wear them as a kind of badge of honor! It showed they were getting a little action, at least. It's the kind of thing that Adam says he missed out on while in highschool because of his uncertainties.
