Fittingly kicking off the long Independence Day weekend, as well as celebrating Pride season, on July 3 Adam Lambert played a special show at Hollywood's Playhouse club as part of the AT&T Live Proud campaign, honoring the Trevor Project for its efforts in crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for LGBTQ youth. Among the guests were winners of the AT&T Live Proud Moment contest, which asked the LGBTQ community and its supporters to share their "live proud" moments via an image or story.

Speaking to Yahoo!'s Reality Rocks on the orange carpet before the concert, Adam addressed comments he made recently when accepting his GLAAD Media Award, about how so many people have very different (and very strong) opinions about how he and other openly gay celebrities should address these issues.

"There are kind of two different schools of thought, two generations, on LGBTQ issues," Adam mused. "You have the older generation that believed that they had to fight and be rebellious and wave the banner really strongly and proudly — and they're the ones who've kind of paved the way for the next generation coming up, who not all of them feel as strongly about identifying so black and white.

"The younger generation doesn't always feel like you have to label yourself, because they feel like we're moving past it. But the older generation is like, 'But wait! We fought so hard for this!' So I think the two sides having a dialogue is a big step in trying to kind of get to the next place, which is a post-gay reality. We're not there yet!"

The Live Proud event, at which AT&T presented a $50,000 check to the Trevor Project, featured Adam singing several songs that were perfect for the occasion, like covers of Tears For Fears' rallying cry "Shout," Bob Marley's universal "Is This Love," and Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" (with the "excuse me while I kiss some guy" joke line intact, of course), as well as his own gay-rights anthem "Outlaws of Love."

Adam Lambert: Trevor Project Live Proud Campaign Show!

Adam Lambert shows off a hint of his chest while performing at the Trevor Project and AT&T’s Live Proud Campaign show and check donation presentation on Wednesday (July 3) at Playhouse Hollywood in Los Angeles.

The 31-year-old singer is an ambassador for the organization, which is the national leader for crisis and suicide prevention services.

“Get into some patriotic spirit w @bonniemckee’s #AmericanGirl !!!” Adam tweeted the next day on Independence Day to encourage his fans to listen to the appropriately themed song.

Adam Lambert agreed to perform three songs at Tuesday night's Trevor Project and AT&T’s Live Proud Campaign.

He performed 10.

The Grammy Award nominated American Idol runner-up dazzled the crowd at Playhouse Hollywood with such hits as Whaddaya Want From Me.

Among those in the crowd was Extra co-host Mario Lopez.

Lambert, 31, is an ambassador for the organization, which is the national leader suicide prevention among LGBT youth. He cheered the recent US Supreme Court ruling that gutted a key portion of the Defense of Marriage Act and killed California's Proposition 8.

'The younger generation doesn't always feel like you have to label yourself, because they feel like we're moving past it. But the older generation is like, "But wait! We fought so hard for this!'"' Lambert told Yahoo.com.

'So I think the two sides having a dialogue is a big step in trying to kind of get to the next place, which is a post-gay reality,' he added. 'We're not there yet...but we're on our way!'

Back on "American Idol" Season 8, an intrepid, turquoise-brassiered fan bumrushed Adam Lambert's homecoming performance at Mt. Carmel High School in San Diego. In case those 35 seconds of TV gold aren't still seared into your brain, here's the footage again:

And four years later, that girl is still on a hot streak, so to speak, stripping and stage-rushing for Adam. Such is the loyalty of the Glambert fanbase.

Adam was performing at the Del Mar Country Fair in the San Diego area on Tuesday, July 2, when during "For Your Entertainment" a bra-flaunting girl sprinted across the stage and high-fived him.

Even more entertaining? It was in fact the very same streaker from 2009, Katelyn Greathouse. It actually seemed like Adam might have recognized the girl (he said something along the lines of "she didn’t take her top off this time" after she made her run). But whether or not he did remember Katelyn, he certainly didn't seem unhappy to see her, brightly shouting "HI!!! " and quipping, "That was cool!" — but otherwise not missing a beat of the song.

The "American Idol" season eight runner-up says no to an all-covers album, which the Sony-owned label was pushing for.

Monday's news -- as reported by The Hollywood Reporter -- that American Idol season eight runner-up Adam Lambert was being asked by his label, RCA Records, to consider recording an all covers album elicited an impassioned response from the legions of Glamberts worldwide. And it wasn't a positive one.

In what was a loud and fairly unanimous outcry, the rocker's fans took to social media, this site and popular American Idol debate destination MJs Big Blog to voice their distaste for the idea. The consensus for the most part being: that Lambert is an artist with his own musical vision who should be allowed to explore it to the fullest.

Now, THR can report, Lambert will be doing just that. The singer is walking away from his RCA contract after two full length albums, 2012's Trespassing and 2009's For Your Entertainment, along with several EPs and a live collection -- all issued by the Sony Music label.

Lambert revealed the news in a letter to THR, which follows in its entirety below. In it, Lambert notes "the oft-cited 'creative differences'" as they related to his next project, stating: "my heart is simply not in doing a covers album." To the contrary, Lambert adds that he's "deep into writing new material with some very talented colleagues," which will surely delight his audience of diehards.

The "evolution" continues, he says. "This music is where my heart is." But it won't be at RCA, where a typical American Idol recording contract stipulates that the artist and the label be on the same page creatively.

Dear Shirley,

Thank you for your continued interest in, and support of, my musical career. After reading your article on July 8th, and seeing the very impassioned responses, I thought it would be good to write and let you know what is actually happening with my next album.

I've had an amazing few years working with the team at RCA; I admire all of them a great deal, and truly appreciate the energy & enthusiasm that went into making both "Trespassing" & "For Your Entertainment" successes.

That said, at this point, we are indeed having the oft-cited "creative differences" as to what my next project will be. Your article was correct, the label is "pushing for an (80's) covers album," and feels that this is the only kind of release they are prepared to support. While there are lots of great songs from that decade, my heart is simply not in doing a covers album.

Over the past four years, I have been truly fortunate to work with an amazing roster of producers, writers and engineers. Thanks to them, I have grown as both a songwriter and a vocalist. Artistically & professionally, I think it is essential that I continue with this evolution. I am already deep into writing new material with some very talented colleagues for a brand new album, and I can't tell you how excited I am to share this new sound & direction. This music is where my heart is, and I believe that is what my fans want to hear. So after careful consideration, I have made the decision to respectfully part ways with RCA. My passion for the music & respect for the fans will always come first. I am excited to find a new label team who shares this vision.

Looking ahead to a just-announced role on season five of Glee, it's clear Lambert, who found his voice in musical theater, has his sights set beyond just a recording career.
