'Having knocked Hollywood's Ryan Seacrest off the top spot as radio DJ of the year Liam McEwan is a name to watch.

The 17-year-old Rangitoto College student is already a hit on the airwaves and earlier this month won the best radio category in the international social media awards, the Shortys.

And all this from a local radio shack at the Devonport wharf.

This recent accolade is testament to four years of hard work building the fan base for his Sunday morning show on The Flea FM.

In that time his show has amassed an audience of 65,000 listeners, many who are devoted fans and helped vote him into the top spot at the Shorty Awards.

"It's pretty humbling and amazing to realise that my fans think I'm the best in the world at what I do," Liam says.

I was just shopping for a gift at a hip little boutique.  While I waited in line at the cashier I heard this conversation between two teens standing behind me:

X: Have you seen that the view count is still going up on her videos from the finale? 
Y:  Angie really should have won, or at least been in the top two.
X:  When they see how much her fans still watch the videos it's got to help her get a good record deal.
Y:  Absolutely!  Angie fans are the best!  We'll work really hard to support her.
X:  Adam Lambert fans are helping us a little on the Titanium video.  They want Angie to get recognition!
Y:  Everyone knows that Angie should have won!

LOL  Helping "a little?"  It was my turn to check out just then, so I didn't even have time to consider whether or not to say something to them.
