Some of you might find this article interesting -- it's about our physical reaction to music. An excerpt: When your playlist strikes all the right chords, your body can go on a physiological joyride. Your heart rate increases. Your pupils dilate. Your body temperature rises. Blood redirects to your legs. Your cerebellum—mission control for body movement—becomes more active. Your brain flushes with dopamine and a tingly chill whisks down your back. About 50 percent of people get chills when listening to music. Research shows that’s because music stimulates an ancient reward pathway in the brain, encouraging dopamine to flood the striatum—a part of the forebrain activated by addiction, reward, and motivation. Read the full text here: mentalfloss.com/article/51745/why-does-music-give-us-chills#ixzz2ZOsSNSCs --brought to you by mental_floss! Thanks. Interestingly, it says that thrill-seekers are less likely to get the chills from music.

Seoulmate, I must confess. Your hubby popped into my dream briefly this morning as I was in that state of half-asleep/half-awake. Don't worry, nothing happened. I was at a music festival (not like the iHeart one) with my middle school band students. Turns out Dr. May was there because he had arranged some music for concert band. I went up to the table where he was sitting and introduced myself, like Adam says he likes. But I called him Mr. May instead of Dr. May. Good thing he is not pretentious. Then I woke up.Must be all this QAL talk lately. See, I didn't intrude in your relationship.

New F-Word Campaign OK, So can anyone figure out what the money is actually going into for the F-Word Campaign other than the marketing the "New F word" message across the country? Noone believes in empowerment more than I do and noone wants to give bully scumbags the finger more than I do (In addition to a little waterboarding and pulling out of fingernails.) I reeeally like the idea of cultivating an inner F-U against the action of bullying in vulnerable kids. We all have to face down the cruel ignorance-driven messages that can otherwise kill our spirit. However, if the New F-Word campaign people could give more info about the methods of empowerment and signs of positivie outcomes of our investment I would be far more likely to donate. I'm sure this campaign will be more than just billboards, shirts, posters and a documentary (which we all know unfortunately the bullies will never go to and will sleep through it if required to watch.) Yes? No? It is VERY easy to throw money into a campaign of visual messages. It is a whole other thing to actually have an effective means to change attitudes and behaviors. From the description it seems the campaign's message is focusing 100% on the ones who are being bullied, to empower them to give the finger (hopefully just the internal finger because an external one by a vulnerable small guy surrounded by bullies could be a very bad scenario). It does NOT seem that the message is for the bullies, to nurture and induce some empathy and reduce bullying behaviors. The problem is that there is a wasteland out there of failed campaigns to change human attitudes and behaviors. I'm sure the two smart guys working on this campaign know this and are creating an evidence based psychologically effective, campaign backed linked to quality research studies and have done lots of research on things like campaigns that proved effective in empowering people to thrive in the face of oppression and rise up to with courage. There is a vast psychology of emotional intelligence and attitude and behavior change science that includes message targeting and framing. I worked at a laboratory. Years of research and field testing work went into developing and testing framing and targeting methods in messages to make them effective and truly get people to change their attitudes and behaviors. To really change attitudes and behavior one has to address the underlying emotions that become barriers to change… including apathy, fear, shame and others. Otherwise this is the art of empowerment rather than the science of empowerment and the investment we make is in the art. Skylar, as far as I can tell, the money goes to fund the two gentlemen who would go around the country and take 10,000 pictures of people shooting the finger, similar to the ones done by Adam and by Leanne Rimes. Then, the people would post these on social media, like the NOH8 pictures. As far as I can tell -- that's it. Am I wrong? Would like to be.

Interestingly, it says that thrill-seekers are less likely to get the chills from music. I enjoyed that as well for many reasons. The "mission control for body movement - becomes more active" ... I cannot sit still, it is just impossible, when almost any kind of music is playing. I sway when it is lyrical and bounce when the music is dancey. I think I must scare people driving down the road if they happen to look over and see me wigging out to the music. Not to compare myself to Adam, LOL, but he also sings with his whole body. There are times when I am watching him that he reminds me of a small child because they laugh and cry with every little muscle of their bodies. And speaking of chills , the lead up to and anticipation of "sleepy bees when the day is done" in Feeling Good does me in every time. There are many more times that I get chills, but that one is a standout. Starting at 1:20 here www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmmzaeKx8B4Oops, I pasted the wrong video at first.

Oops, I'm spamming. Oh well, one more and then I've got to get busy.
Last night I relaxed by reading the long thread at MJ's about Adam and his return to rock roots. I thought it was very interesting and a good debate (some comments had been deleted by that time, so I don't know if they were obnoxious). At any rate, much of the discussion was about defining rock (vs. pop/rock, folk rock, alt rock, indie rock, rock and roll(really?), etc.) The biggest thing I took away from that discussion was that there is not clear definition of it. Some say it's a lifestyle, some need a gravelly voice, some need everyone to play instruments or they are not worthy--all very confusing to me. Q3 was the only one (I think) to try to define it in terms of musical characteristics (describing the drum back-beat, use of guitars, and more).
Anyway, it all lead to more confusion for me because no one seems to agree on what "real" rock is. So a take way two things: each of us has a personal definition of what it is, and current rock is more limited in scope that classic rock, which was more embracing of a variety of sounds and ideas. I'll paraphrase Q3 again when she said that she's spent a lifetime listening to rock and knows it when she hears it.
Another commenter reminded us of a line by Duke Ellington that was used by Peter Schikele (aka "PDQ Bach"), who had a show on public radio where he delved into various types of music to discover what made them tick. Duke said:
"If it sounds good, it is good."
I'm just going with that idea: I like it or I don't. The genre doesn't matter. I seem to like Adam's songs that tend to be more rock that dance. Whatever.
Schikele also used the following closing phrase: "It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that certain je ne sais quoi." Pretty much everything Adam performs has that.

Too bad that TFM was linked to "2012", and really not sensible for the credits of that movie.
ETA: "Runnin'" for the 2014 Olympics really does not make sense because it is the Winter Olympics. There is not running.
Seriously, I do not see how it fits either Olympics:
Steel to my tremblin' lips How did the night ever get like this? One shot and the whiskey goes down, down, down Bottom of the bottle hits Waking up my mind as I throw a fit The breakin' is takin' me down, down, down
My heart's beating faster I know what I'm after
I've been standing here my whole life Everything I've seen twice Now it's time I realized It's spinning back around now On this road I'm crawlin' Save me cause I'm fallin' Now I can't seem to breathe right Cause I keep runnin runnin runnin runnin Runnin runnin runnin runnin Runnin from my heart
Perhaps a remix of Sure Fire Winners with only some of the lyrics.
