I didn't get to watch the opening number with Gaga....so just watched it. I thought she did a great job...It may not be your cup of tea..or it may, but she has a great voice and it was delivered really well. The whole thing was well executed and entertaining...I thought. Actually the cream really rose to the top in this show, I think...with the possible exception of JT...his just went on far too long and wasn't special enough to keep your interest. I confess Miley made me laugh....she still manages to look like a kid trying to get a reaction from her parents and be accepted by the big kids. I think that Macklemore & Ryan were great and I really liked Kanye's performance -- there was really emotion and content in both performances/both songs. The superhyped Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and JT performances were just OK. But I was impressed with the amount of work Lady Gaga and JT did. And at least JT sang all of his. Lady Gaga did sing the intro -- but the rest was lip synced (no way to sing while doing that number and similar to how she arranges her live concerts). I was pretty surprised that Katy's first performance of Roar was so poorly lip synced. Biggest disappointment of the night for me was Bruno Mars who usually does great live numbers -- but there was no song there. Hard to make something out of "Gorilla" but adding a bunch of green lasers did not make the song any better. But that Miley-Robin Thicke-TI-Pharrell carnival numbers was just a mess. ETA: Sorry, I forgot, Lady Gaga does not lip sync her performances -- I mean sung augmented with a prerecorded track.

It is working. Applause is officially stuck in my head. I love how Gaga is poking fun at herself in the performance tonight. And she demonstrated that she does have an amazing singing voice. Of course most of the performance was comprised of backtracks to sound identical to the new single, imo.
JT had such a long set because he was being honored with the Vanguard award or as JT described it "the award for getting old." I thought his performance was VERY entertaining. The man has the moves-he CAN dance. It was fun to see NSYNC together again, even so briefly.
Bruno Mars was incredibly boring. Can this song be a hit?! Where is the hook? Was there even a melody? But then again, I thought Locked in Heaven was extremely dull-like a many of the nominated songs, I mean videos.
Makes me wonder how Adam could possibly fit into this scene.
Sure wish Daft Punk, Nile and Pharrell could have shown off their outfits a little longer, maybe while making music. I think they would have blown everyone away.
For the first time, I thought the rappers, ie , Kanye and Drake, sounded better "live" than some of the other performers.
My heart skipped a beat when JHud joined Macklemore and Lewis during Same Love-thinking Adam might show up with them.
ASAP Rocky was weird with the "homosexuality" thing while Jason Collins delivered his awkward intro to Macklemore and Lewis.
Are all of the awards voted on by fans? I pretty much called out most of the winners-those I figured the tween girls would be voting for..... except for Video of the Year (JT)
FYI-I heard Taylor Swift on the preshow interview say that Austin Mahone-the winner of Artist to Watch (Adam's moment), opened for her on the Red tour. Might explain why he has so many followers. I saw his performance during the preshow. He comes across as a Bieber wannabe.. The latest thing for the little girls to like.
Oh but Adam looked amazing. Did you see him in a crowd shot when JT was getting the Video of the Year award? I had to rewind and pause! He was standing up, clapping, and looking oh so fabulous and sweet.
eta: I want to thank those that answered my request for a ustream link. I opted for pool time and watched later it in west coast time on the TV.

ETA: Sorry, I forgot, Lady Gaga does not lip sync her performances -- I mean sung augmented with a prerecorded track. I watched the Gaga, Miley/Thicke, and JT. I liked JT the best. Loved the dancing and I thought he sounded pretty good. I thought Gaga was just OK. Just not a fan of her voice at all. Has she been having plastic surgery? She looks different. Miley/Thicke were awful. The grinding (or whatever you call it when she was backing into him) really bothered me because he seems old enough to be her father. Was it just me or was Robin horribly out-of-tune? The third time I've seen a live performance of that song that I just didn't like. The song really does sound like Marvin Gaye's Got To Give it Up to me. No wonder there's been a controversy about it.
