I didn't get to watch the opening number with Gaga....so just watched it. I thought she did a great job...It may not be your cup of tea..or it may, but she has a great voice and it was delivered really well. The whole thing was well executed and entertaining...I thought. Actually the cream really rose to the top in this show, I think...with the possible exception of JT...his just went on far too long and wasn't special enough to keep your interest. I confess Miley made me laugh....she still manages to look like a kid trying to get a reaction from her parents and be accepted by the big kids. eta.....I just now got to see Katy's act....she did a really good job too, I thought. She certainly showed the girls how to do it without flaunting the body....yet still looking good! Good for her....Like Adam said re Idol....always do the opposite of what the others are doing You are me!!!!!!! I laughed through almost the whole show! Very entertaining! Yes, yes, yes to Katy being adorable and not being naked up there! I can give Katy a thumbs up for that -- but I cannot forgive her for the atrocious lip syncing. Seriously, at least try to fake it. We know Katy can sing -- and it makes her red carpet comment after she roared just seem silly. JMHO but I really appreciate artists who actually sing when they perform vs. doing a pantomime to their song. |

I think the VMAs are supposed to be a little trainwreck-y -- my impression is that the performers are encouraged to be outrageous and to dress a little crazy. The Grammys are the more formal, almost conservative, industry awards, and the VMAs have historically been their naughty little cousin. The Britney-Madonna kiss, Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift onstage -- this is the kind of stuff the VMAs are known for, along with OTT musical performances. So, I guess I wasn't surprised that the show was fun in places and a hot mess in others. It kind of is what it is. But I do agree with Q3 -- if performers going to be on a live TV show, it would be nice if they actually sang live. This was a show (supposedly) celebrating music after all, so it would be nice if they made the effort. But if they're going to lip-synch, they should at least try to make it convincing. For anyone interested, here is the NY Times review of the VMAs. The author talks about how bored the audience looked (lol), how ridiculous it was that One Direction won "Song of the Summer" over both Robin Thicke and Daft Punk (I agree), and how the performances ranged from the good (Kanye, Drake, Bruno) to the ridiculous (guess who). www.nytimes.com/2013/08/27/arts/music/mtv-video-music-awards-review.html?_r=0 |
