OMG! I can't!!! Adam becoming a bad guitar player so he can write "better" songs scares the hell out if me! I can't think of many thingsthat would totally stifle his creativity more than that! Most song writing teams have a lyricist and a composer . And since most composing is done with computers now, trust me, plucking a few chords on a guitar happens more and more rarely!! BTW, I think Adam is a great song writer! ETA: Adam is a smart man. If he felt he needed to play an instrument, he'd have done it! He grew up with a piano in their house! He is almost 32 and extremely focused! I think I trust Adam on what he "needs!" My daughter wrote songs on her keyboard synthesizer, where there are buttons to play different chords and sounds. Of course, some people use the piano, some guitar, some use nothing. Adam does not have to prove anything. I know there are FOOs who still, to this day, say Adam is not a real artist because he doesn't play an instrument. I agree with those of you who think Adam is a good songwriter. Many people in the industry, e.g. Rob Cavallo, Avicii and one of his co-writers on TP said so (can't remember if it was BC Jean or Bonnie McKee). One of my dear friends is really into lyrics (moreso than the melody) and she loves Adam's lyrics. It's funny how no one seems to care if any of the female artists like Rihanna, Kelly, Carrie, Whitney, JHud, etc. don't regularly write their hit songs and/or play an instrument while performing. I bet those FOOs don't say that they are not real artists. Why is Adam always put to a different standard? Kris Allen and P2 were lauded as true artists because they wrote their own songs and played instruments. Have any of the songs they've written become big hits? Angie Miller sings, plays piano, and writes her own music. As far as I know, she is not yet signed. Are Tony Bennett and Elvis not thought of as true artists because they didn't write their own songs?

ME TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well in voter's defense, lol, it is the full length shot of him in the blue triangle shirt and not quite as OMG worthy as the performance ensemble. If they would just put another pic up. I've read Wonderwall so many times and if there is a little bit of scandal or something controversial in a stars life, you will get a FAIL vote most of the time. I said awwwwwww!

Lots of opinions on composing. I'm not sure mediocre guitar or piano skills would improve his abilities. In fact, that could be a drawback. If a person does not play well, he may get stuck in the only three chords he knows and not be able to see beyond this limitation. Adam can sing and is pretty creative when he improvs (not the usual melismas that are so common). To create a melody, he only needs his imagination and that voice. Someone else can arrange the rest.
I enjoy his lyrics and writing them does not require being an instrumentalist. There are many songwriting teams where one is the lyricist and one is the composer--George and Ira Gershwin, anyone?
BUT, he is an artist (in the true sense of the word) just by being a singer. I said it years ago here, in the classical music world, the word "artist" is reserved for the very elite musicians. I would never be called an artist and I do music for a living. But in the world of popular music, everyone is an artist--even contestants on AI and The Voice who have never had a paid gig. Adam is an artist in the sense that we classical musicians mean it.
ETA: Oh, sorry to disagreed with you, Crazyforadam. I still really enjoy reading your opinions. I always read your long posts. There is going to be something interesting in them.

Adam does something mosts artists cannot do and that is sing and perform with perfection. He doesn't need an instrument to demonstrate he is an artist. Most songs today are collabs from writing, the music, the production. No person is an island. I just think the collabs create some pretty terrific sounds.

Ok, let me rush in and clarify. I in know way think Adam must play a guitar or someone must play an instrument to be a respected artist. I think Adam is an awesome song writer-- I greatly prefer his Trespassing songs to the ones penned by others. But I think what he needs is to take it to the next level with his instrumentation. Whether that be by getting a collaborator who is more able to do that, by focusing on more songs written by others, or by learning it himself, I dont know. Queen has taught me the value of the music and paying attention to songs that have catchier music than lyrics all lead me to think this is where he can improve. There are songs on Tres. that I believe have greatness -even viseral connections, but they could have been even more complex and even greater. Maybe his new direction will lend itself to this anyway. I do not set my sights low for this man and I believe he will never stop trying to learn more and grow further. And, I can be his biggest fan and admit improved skills, his or others, would be forward movement for him.

Oh YES,...he has admitted ...he has "made out/kissed etc" with a few gals in his time...14ish, drunk at a bar...but I think the reference is about "going all the way"...which Adam implied/admitted to just before the Sauli era. Prior to that he said he had not. Someone will know where/how to retrieve that interview quote. Speculation...I wondered if when he was abroad on tour? haha.... incognito??? but hey ...it is his private life...and I have intruded pretty far anyway with my comments. YIKESAdam actually said somewhere that he had gone down on, i.e. not just kissing, an older girl in a car when he was 14ish. That is separate from the more recent thing you are talking about. ETA: Ok may have been when he was 17, might not even have been in a car, but was in his teens and not as recent as pre-Sauli. I certainly remember all those interview revelations re youthful experiences.... Virginity with a woman...was a big shock. I await others who can find the interview re admitting he had sex with a woman. It was well after AI and well after he was in Asia for concerts....cannot remember when. Maybe he is geographically challenged with women like he is with geography... and he did not mean what he said....but it was a revelation discussed. Maybe I took things out of context...and I may eat my words, but for now I stick with that view. I specifically remember that I thought...well ...he tried it before Sauli became a "significant person in his life".

And, I can be his biggest fan and admit improved skills, his or others, would be forward movement for him. His first two singles on Trespassing were written by others (and very successful songwriters), and we know how that worked out for Adam. I think the key is to hear a song over and over till it actually becomes catchy. Also, the more ears that hear them, the more successful. There were many songs on the radio that I didn't like upon first listen, but got to like them after hearing them over and over.
