It just finally occurred to me that this man has undergone some kind of transformation, a metamorphosis of sorts in the last several months. I am trying to figure out when.. I guess it started with Divas, but even into the WAG tour, that Singapore interview, the Miami interview.. there is been such a change. I said before he has grown up, but it's more. The young impulsive slightly wild over-sharing exuberant polish and makeup and a little shock value theatre guy has changed into this sophisticated, regal, confident, private, and yet a little camera shy ,kind and gentle man. What happened , when and why is my question, yet there really is no answer? It just is. Yes, he’s evolved. And while some deplore what they think is a, a…lessening of his wild and crazy side (the makeup, the wild costumes, the sexy stage antics), I think it’s much simpler than that. (Warning for amateur psychoanalysis and projecting) In the early days of his post Idol career, I think Adam felt an extreme amount of pressure to prove that he didn’t conform to the world’s expectations of “safe” gay celebrities; he was crazy, wild unpredictable, in-your-face sexual and gay, and the world better accept that. I think some of it was a defensive mechanism…it wasn’t that he always wanted to present that aspect of his personality, but he kind of felt like he had to, otherwise he was taking the easy route. Now…he doesn’t. He doesn’t have anything to prove. The world accepts that he is this staggeringly talented, amazing, crazy, sexual, gay and yes, often flamboyant and provocative person; but he doesn’t have to PROVE it all the time if he doesn’t want to. It’s got to take lot of mental energy and time and effort to make sure that your look and demeanour is always on point with a wild and crazy image. Now, if he glues rhinestones to his face and dresses in glitter and feathers and kisses people on stage..it’ll because he wants to, not because he feels he has to ensure the world accepts the image he’s cultivated. And because he’s putting less pressure on himself to live up to that image, sometimes he can present a different image if that’s how he feels on any given day, and there’s no risk there to his personal brand or his integrity. There’s a time and a place for his wild side; but there are also appropriate times and places for all the other facets of his personality. And he has the confidence to know now that what matters is what he wants, not what others want of him. IMO, YMMV Um. I need an editor. I’m sure that could have been said in about 2 sentences, not 9. I agree that he's evolved, as all human beings do, but I disagree that Adam felt pressure to prove he was an non-conformist gay. He was simply living how he had lived pre-idol. He was still living his "Zodiac life" and we've all seen the videos of those days to know that was authentic Adam and he wasn't out to prove anything back then so I don't imagine he was trying to prove anything after Idol either. I think it may be as simple as him not feeling the need to cover up what he viewed as flaws. His skin has improved 1000% and perhaps the lack of make up is a reflection of that improvement or instructions from the dermatologist to lay off the foundation. Whatever it is it suits him. He appears happier and healthier than he has since he first appeared on our screens January 2009. |
