Ok, with all due respect for Annie Lennox and Sinead O'Connor, why now? It's not like this trend started yesterday with Miley perfomace. I see it for last ten years or even more. It's not recent. So true. Maybe she hasn't noticed Gaga's or Rhianna's performances or videos. Or maybe Miley's was the straw that broke the camel's back for her. Wonder if she remembers early Madonna.  As for those who love Freddie or any past performer, IMO, the legend always looms larger than life. I think it is a good thing that Adam is being compared favorably with this legendary performer. At least the legitimate reviewers aren't saying that Adam sucked. heh. Honestly I don't think Freddie Mercury was a good singer I don't like his voice so when they say "he is no Freddie Mercury" I see it as a compliment. |

But early Madonna meant something. Miley playing with a foam finger is just juvenile and stupid (IMO) I love what Annie Lennox had to say. And I would bet that there are a whole bunch of other respected artists who feel the same way. Plus Madonna was 25 or 26 when she did the famous Like a Virgin VMAs. That's the difference too. Miley is 20 and a former child star. I think the change started with Britney Spears sexually dancing down the hallway jailbait style in a schoolgirl uniform at 15. That's when it became acceptable to sexualize younger and younger girls. I remember thinking at the time, "uh, oh. Here's a shift in the culture." And it's just gotten worse since. I think Annie Lenox, who was instantly an icon among my house of gay male roommates who loved her outré androgynous look in the Sweet Dreams video, is totally right. And all the bullshit talk about "empowerment" by women "owning their sexuality." It's not empowerment to the men who run the music business. It's $$$. |

I think there are possibly multiple reasons for these statements. 1. sometimes it is just that we have reached the tipping point 2. many of the overtly sexualized performances over the last years have been incrementally perfomed by performers who have made the claim to art/dance....a claim that Miley cannot make....she is no Janet Jackson or Beyonce or JLo on the dance floor....she is gawky and awkward. And her performances have escalated at warp speed...no incremental growth for her. 3. even Brittney's 'sexualization' did not start right off with nudity and crassness....the first really "pornographic" sort of vid was done with innuendo only...she remained clothed, for the most part. Also...part of the concern by others is that she is following in Brittney's footsteps all the way to full on meld down. Sinead's and other initial comments were made out of concern...she should be thankful so many are actually concerned enough to say something... 4. Everything Miley is doing looks like it is done by a child....who is being maniupulated and is being rebellious. It is not sexy...it is awkward and often ugly. It is not well done. And she is being really rude and dismissive of concerned musical icons. 5.When she attacked Sinead, she attacked an icon of the feminist movement, and someone with real talent. Miley should wish to be able to sing like her. 6 Finally... there really will be something to worry about when everyone shuts up and just lets her make an utter fool of herself....and writes her off. For me, one of the saddest things is that compared to Miley...Robin Thicke is getting off scott free....I find that more disturbing than a silly child acting up. He is getting gigs he really doesn't rate, JMHO....sorry if anyone is a fan of the..person. Lyrics and words do have meaning .... it is disingenuous to claim otherwise ... and if he stands behind his words, I am really sorry for his wife. You made some good points here mszue, IMO and I really agree with the boldet part! |

Canada! I have to say that you have the most gorgeous broadcaster I've ever seen. From the first moment when I saw him, sit with Adam to have a chat, I think! Aww! This man is so handsome, his sexy voice, his intelligence, everything is Aww! This interview was a great ... Two intelligent, gorgeous people in one room. ![]() If I killed her thread .. whatever that means. It was not in my intentions.. |

Love to see the old guard finally getting it on! I think perhaps a tipping point really has been reached. For anyone who is interested in some of the academic work done in this area, I suggest you google/youtube a couple of vids [or go to your public library] and start with DreamWorlds 3 [or 1 or 2] and Tough Guise. There are lots after those.....
