I admit I listened to it for the first time yesterday (and I still haven't watched the Psy Gangnam Style YT in its entirety), but I already had heard about the backstory. If you try to ignore the visuals and the lyrics, you will notice that 1. The music is VERY similar to the formulaic crap we hear on radio, and I am sure it is on purpose. 2. Some of the favorite effects used in modern music were used in an funny way - for example the Mo-o-o-rse, Ho-o-o-rse part. 3. Other than in most radio hits, the guys have pretty strong voices. 4. They intended it to be crap, they knew it was crap, and it still got 200+ million views, which points a finger at the industry and the audience. "See, we made crap, and you liked it like all the other crap out there. Even with all the stupid lyrics and ridiculous visuals". In that context, it is a great parody. I both hated the (intentionally) crappy parts of it and loved its parody qualities. Slightly related - German ATopers might remember the case where a host of a comedy TV show represented Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest with a nonsense song written in a more or less invented language and placed 5th back in 2000. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadde_hadde_dudde_da%3FIntentional crap often scores high. That probably explains why the industry keeps on producing crap (intentionally or not), and will-i-am is a star but Adam isn't (yet). I think that we forgot about one, important thing when we are criticizing all that funny, crap music - mostly people don't want big, life changing moments from music (anyway not all the time). They want something funny and easy, something they can dance to, something idiotic and relaxing, something completely without meaning. They want entertainment. And the primary purpose of the music since the dawn of humanity is to make people happy, not to make big artistic impression. There were days on this planet when music, painting, sculpture, photography, fashion, films, design was just entertainment not art. Every artist IMO sholud remember about that. Once we all were just mere craftsmen. I don't post much any more, but I've been keeping up. After reading many of the posts I feel compelled to add my 2 cents. I think you nailed it. This song makes me do a primal scream in my head, truly it does. Aside from that, I identify and appreciate it for what it is, entertainment. This is further confirmed when songs like this filters down to my daughter's 4th grade set and explodes on the elementary level... she and her friends find it funny, catchy, silly and entertaining. They don't take it serious, because they know its not meant to be. They will memorize song lyrics, after song lyrics, but distinctly know that this type of song is not in the same category as everything else and accept if for what it is. Personally, I'd probably be more offended if this song was lumped with the top 40 and topping multiple charts.

Once we all were just mere craftsmen. Ooooo, a philosophical discussion begins. I'm going to disagree with you a bit. Music has served many purposes from its earliest days (I think)--not just to make us happy. Music is a bonding force whether used to mourn or dance. It was also used way just to get through the work day--think of slave songs in the U.S., many of which are not happy or upbeat. Sailors used work songs to keep a steady beat while hauling in the sails. Many ancient songs are happy, but many express grief. Much music was created as a religious expression. It's a mixed bag. I'm not sure we can say the arts in all their varieties began as entertainment. Humans have an innate desire to express themselves (including cavemen who drew on walls). If it's a personal expression, I think it is meant to make an artistic expression. There are some pretty artsy films from the days of silent movies. But you are making me think about this.

Traditionally, art both entertains and instructs. Mozart obviously didn't compose the Requiem for "entertainment," ie, to make the audience party during a funeral. However, the Requiem is gorgeous, pleasurable to listen to (for me). Music and all arts, imo, must have an entertaining element--ie, they have to give some pleasure of some sort to an audience. The audience can be different, the occasion can be different. There has to be some entertainment value, though.

Yes, but people then never was thinking about this like we are these days - music then was not art but a companion or tool. Expressing yourself is entertaining, it gives you pleasure. It's not about art, it's all about that feeling.
