@bailey: Adam's fan base bought week 1. That is how he ended up with a #1 album in US and CA. Once the fanbase was done buying, nobody else bought, because nobody knew about the album, exactly because it was not supported by the label, which is the point of the whole discussion.
Adam did not sell less than others in comparison to twitter followers, the ratio of 10:1 is pretty common ratio.
What can be different for A3?
- New and supportive label
- Album more rock leaning
- Existing and well planned promotion
- Growth of fan base prior to A3 release (Glee and other)
First of all, growing the fans base prior to A3 release is in my mind essential. Glee is great start of course, but a few other cornerstones should be put in place prior to release. Depending on focus of album, i.e. if the album is rock leaning, then the classic rock audience should be targeted. If it is dance oriented, target that audience, use LMD, etc.
A selling of a public image and a storyline, should continue, mostly via TV, hopefully - I think that the dichotomy of Adam's persona is a good story-line, in principle. In addition, I see a fashion angle in development, and maybe some acting. All can help to position Adam as a current artist, who is very much in demand and has an active and powerful multifaceted career going on.
If I were in charge of his promotion, I would also start using his impressive fan art to his advantage. I am still waiting for a fan art coffee table book, maybe some fashion that is actually wearable. This helps bring some money into the account that can then be used for other promotion.
I think that Adam is also ready for some commercials and product placement. Not so much as the sole person in a commercial, but as one artist among multiple. This is even more true for oversees. His looks are stunning. He can draw some interest.
That seemed to start somewhat in Asia last year, but outside of that commercial with Psy in Korea, otherwise, I have not heard of many other ones on an ongoing basis. And the Hennessy thing was obviously just one off. Is Adam still doing that video game commercial in China? That seemed a tad weird to me, the way it was recorded, but then I know nothing about what works in China. Anyways...I think the commercial angle could grow a bit and would bring Adam to our TV screens.
Then A3 obviously needs a decent lead single, duh! And some solid promotion. Any label that pics up Adam now, did not have to pay for most of the production of the album, they only have to invest in the marketing of the album. They are making their choices with full knowledge of what Adam has ready to release. They can openly talk about strategy with him, before signing at the bottom-line. Adam has DMG to back him up, rather than useless 19whatever letter.
All together should make quite a bit of difference.
And finally, to go back to duality topic. If I were Adam, I would promote a double album strategy right from the get-go. One album more left-field, one more WWFM-mainstream. Kind of like and old a and b side. Both with 10 songs, no bonus needed. Adam's songs all deserve to be on main album, this bonus placement has mostly hindered good songs to be heard in the past. And the comparison that will be drawn to somebody else that released two albums? So what? Not the worst attention to draw to yourself.

Oh I completely left Idol off my list! I loved Titanium and can't believe I forgot about it. But I am happy that Adam had so much going on this year that I left American Idol (and his beautiful performance of Titanium) off my list!
Much as I loved it, it was really Angie's moment and not about Adam (in the context of the program) so I am leaving it off my list.
Plus, I really like having Adam far, far away from Idol now. It does him very little good.
I really want to see him perform on The Voice and SNL. My hope is he does his new single on both programs -- since they are now the shows that sell music.

IMHO Trespassing was an album before it's time. It is so well written and performed the "normal" public just wasn't ready and Adam was not out and about at all. But I think they will be ready for his next album. This whole year he has spent preparing the people with his more public appearances. In Orlando, I heard many comments from people about not seeing him since Idol and were surprised at how rockin' his music is. Idol, Divas, VMA's, Iheart and especially Glee have reminded people just why they were so taken with him in the first place. And the media has been giving him a lot of good coverage. I'm getting very positive vibes about this coming year and A3.

Cuckoo definitely as the first single, then Naked Love.. totally agree. But POP That LOCK.. it's in another dimension and could have totally smashed as a third. I still think the general buying pubic knows a good song. Those are good songs. Oh and Shady.. .. adding.. listening to this EDm music lately had me dig up the remix CD of Trespassing and I had the Pop that Lock on total repeat.. it's such a good song! Adam was ahead of his time, but don't you think when his next album gets released Trespassing is going to be the hidden treasure his new fan base will be raving about. Considering the new fans from Glee are discovering it, I'd say"YES!" Adam has 2 excellent albums for new fans to discover!
