Nobody is considered legendary after five years. Nobody. Freddie may have had more recognition at that point in his career, but he wasn't considered legendary. And let's be honest--dying young always helps cement a "legendary" status. It doesn't make sense to compare the career of someone who came into the public's awareness in 2008 and someone who began his career over forty years ago and has been dead for twenty-three years. I agree which is why I usually don't compare But as it was being discussed I think it's a point that is extremely valid. It's in baseball - comparing a rookie of the year with a hall of famer. The rookie could be amazing, and we'll see where he is later on in his career. No Freddie was not legendary at that point either although in 1977 Bo Rap did win BEST SINGLE OF THE LAST 25 YEARS which was quite an accomplishment - close to legendary. Yes dying young helps cement legendary status, but let's also face it that if Freddie didn't die, how much more would he have done over the last twenty years to further cement it as well? Ok so you win .. now what? I DID?!?!?!?! What do I win?! I wasn't going for a win, just giving different perspectives. You win being a loyal Freddie Fan.. The truth of the matter is I didn't really know much about Queen until Adam & Queen. After hearing them together,i watched every video I could of freddie and Queen and became a fan. I was fascinated not only by his talent but by his entire l life. On Adam From what I have read from folks who have worked with Adam over the years,is that basically we have only seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Adam's talent.. so i'm looking forward to years of discovery

Soo, I hear Adam is moving, by the end of January. Wonder what he has in mind. His apt is now listed for rent.

Adam has a great (one in a "billion") voice. Freddie had a great (one in a "billion") voice. Thanks to technology we get to enjoy them both. Are there others? Well with billions on the planet I'd guess so.

Hi All, quick drive-by. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Eri9 and Talon's post especially Today. Talon, I go way back and when younger Queen (with Freddie vocals) was tops on my list of bands/songs, along with other bands that had the OT lead vocalists. So not a surprise for me when I had my jaw drop moment with Adam. I didn't watch AI, and only caught him on the second to last night of the season (nothing else on so I turned it on... and thought he was really good but the other guy would win cuz he played piano and was main stream. ANd thoutht to myself - if I think about it, I will watch tomorrow to see who really does win. On finale night I forgot to watch until about the last 45 minutes. It was when Adam sang Beth and joined Kiss on stage my jaw dropped. It was at the end of that performance with Kiss I said to myself... self, if he can hold his own and more than "then some" with Kiss, this guy has "IT" it all and could be a legend in his own right... I became so obsessed at that moment that after the show I started to Google everything I could find for Adam Lambert. Took a while to realize that some of the vides (pre idol stuff) was actually the same guy - I was all WTF, Wow, eyes popping, wow he's singing that, oh my he's doing that... you all know what I mean, LOL! So for me, Adam and Freddie are both fantastic in their own right. Apple and oranges as many say, but can hold his own with Queen. Talon, I am really glad for your reality check post and don't really disagree with what you say. Adam will mature over time, and more music making opportunities will provide chances to get the music and band that will propel him to the next level. I feel that in my bones, as they say. I too would like for his band to have a richer sound no matter what that means. Keeping many of his current mates and adding more instruments to the mix or what... The band just needs to be in 3D like Adam. What I love about Adam and Brian together is the way Brian's Guitar can "sing" along with Adam in many areas of a song. That is not something that happens otherwise with Adam's own band. eri9: Really interesting and timely post for me. My DH has actually shown an interest in watching the iHeart Queen-Bert on YouTube, and I actually printed out your post for him to read. He asks the same thing about what's so great about Adam, and your post sums it up and is coming from - well, someone that is not me: ) Ok, off to skim the rest of the thread... Thanks everyone...

Well we have to agree to disagree. Songwriting comes into play because I think of the overall package and of staying power and of recogntion. Placido Domingo has worlds of classical pieces written by some of the greatest composers in the world to sing. Adam has been getting mostly (and don't flay me here) forgettable electro pop. Don't get me wrong, they are sometimes catchy, and they are sometimes fun but if anyone else sang them, would you guys really dig the songs? He's not getting great songs to sing. Freddie being a songwriter takes care of that distinction. Not that Freddie didn't cover anyone - The Great Pretender was friggin awesome. His work on Time was phenomenal...but Freddie didn't have to rely on someone to write him a song that will be remembered. He did it himself. To me that's partially where the discussion changes. It's not just Adam vs Freddie as a singer but it's Adam vs Freddie as a musical icon. As far as pure singing, see it still is subjective as I think that Freddie is still a superior singer. Adam has a better high range, although Freddie has more of a range. I believe Freddie is also more powerful overall, and I think Freddie has a more crisp, cutting tone. Again subjective though. I don't mind you thinking otherwise Thank you, Talon, for your posts. I appreciate your explanation of how the Queen fanbase feels about Adam and your thoughts about the relative talents of Freddie and Adam. Great food for thought. For my part, I consider choosing between Freddie and Adam to be like choosing a favorite child -- I can't do it. For me, they are different artists, but I love them equally. The first time I heard Adam was the night he sang "Black or White" (I hadn't watched that season until the end of the semi-finals). When he started singing, my first thought was "Who is this guy -- he's awesome!". And my second thought was "Freddie Mercury". Not because Adam sounds like Freddie, but because I had the same visceral reaction to Adam that I have when I hear Freddie sing -- a sheer thrill and a sense of joy. And a feeling of watching someone performing stunts on a high wire and wondering how the hell they are doing what they are doing. I think they are both consummate artists, each in their own way. And they have the power to move and thrill me like almost no one else. I listen to lots of different artists and different types of music: rock, pop, jazz, musical theatre, classical. And IMHO, Freddie and Adam are in a class of their own (along with a few other singers I admire). Re: Adam's music, I have to agree with Talon on this one. I thoroughly enjoy "Trespassing" and "Glam Nation Live" (which I now prefer to "FYE" due to production issues), but I don't think the songs Adam has recorded are a match for the songs Queen recorded even early in their careers. But I am hopeful that Adam will write or co-write better songs as he goes along. And as far as the band goes, yes, I do agree that it needs an upgrade. My wish, as I wrote the other day, is for better musicians in some slots and/or a few additions, and great back-up singers. Hopefully Adam will be in a financial place to do this or his next tour, if he wishes.
