Coming out of "lurkdom" to say I really found the discussion re Adam v Freddie on yesterday's thread so interesting! Thank you to everyone for you insightful thoughts and opinions and expertise! ♥
Apologies for long-winded post ahead.... lots to say and a 2-3 wines consumed... feel free to scroll! :D
I posted on my Facebook page sometime in March 2009 that this guy on American Idol was quite possibly the best singer I had ever heard. And growing up with a professional opera-singer father, with some singing training and experience myself, and being exposed to all kinds of musical theatre from Gilbert & Sullivan to Rodgers & Hammerstein to Lerner & Lowe, as well as many operatic arias, I heard a lot of very very good singers. In my late teens /early 20's I was obsessed with the musicals of Cats, Chess, Evita, Joseph, Les Miserables, Phantom, Miss Saigon, Starlight Express etc etc. and discovered the incredible voices of Elaine Paige, Michael Ball, Rob Guest (NZer
) Lea Salonga and others who were all both technically skilled and delivered emotional performances even through the new technology of CDs!
I was also a fan of 80's pop / rock music! Great melodies, harmonies, POWER BALLADS!!!!! :D
Then along comes Adam Fucking Lambert! It was obvious to all my family and friends that I was becoming obsessed with this guy, especially in May 2010 when I decided to travel to the USA to see him live in concert - despite not really being in a financial position to do so. I was constantly asked "what is it about Adam Lambert?" Curtailing the desire to say "Have you HEARD him??? have you SEEN him perform???? " No easy answer...... then I had a wee epiphany (no "shrooms" involved I swear!
) that here was a singer that combined my LOVE for musical theatre voices with pop/rock music that I loved so much also. His versatility!!! CTMBTM to ROF to BTBW to PTFM to IICHY to Mad World and Feeling Good to WLL and every other Idol performance....then Starlight. & Bowie Medley.... and the FYE album!!!
So in summary - I do believe he is the best singer I have ever heard.... based on all of the subjective" and "objective" criteria discussed yesterday. He is certainly the most versatile singer I have ever heard, and even my opera-singer father agrees. (and he's 71 and not exactly into pop/rock music! haha)
Discussions about his voice & range have fascinated me immensely. I LOVE the Vocal Masterclass thread!
So heading back to the talking about his range.... I made this graphic soon after Trespassing was released, in response to discussions about the range of that song..... hopefully to help non-music trained people to understand a bit more....
I stand by this graphic, however I do believe he hit a semi-tone (half tone) higher (B5) at the end of that stripped back master version of Aftermath!
